Earlier this year, following a public consultation, Ofcom announced
plans that would allow Government departments, their executive agencies
and certain other public bodies to trade radio spectrum. The MoD have
now published a consultation on reforming how it will manage its
spectrum use more effectively and its plans to release and share
spectrum. The consultation can be found on the MoD website. Go to

Russia has successfully orbited a new amateur radio satellite
designated as RS-30. The CW beacon is operational on 435.315MHz with
reports of other signals also on 435.215MHz as well. It appears to be
in a 1500km orbit, which would give a pass time of up to 20 minutes and
enable stations over 7000km away to be worked.

Castles and Stately Homes on the Air was formed in 2005, this provides
a fascinating heritage activity with more than local interest. The
British Isles abounds with castles, forts and fortifications as well as
great houses and priories, parks, lodges, manor houses, etc. Some of
these will certainly be found near you. Even the remains of sites are
accepted as venues, provided the site is historically recognised. Get

The 14th World ARDF Championships takes place from 2 - 7 September near
Seoul in Korea. If your team wants to participate in the Championships
and you have not sent the letter of intent yet, please send it as soon
as possible to the organisers. You should fill the category, name,
callsign, date of birth and passport number of participants in the
application and send it back via e-mail no later than 30 July. Full

Bulgarian National Radio has begun six months of trial DRM digital
broadcasts for listeners in Central and Western Europe. According to
the DRM Consortium, the trial will run for six months. The schedule is
0600 to 1200 Friday to Sunday on 11900kHz; 0900 - 1200 Monday to
Thursday on 11900kHz and 1300 to 1600 Monday to Thursday on 9700kHz.
All transmissions are beamed 306 degrees, with 20kW power.

Additional GB2RS newsreaders are needed to join the teams already
reading on 5MHz at 12.30 hours and on Top Band at 21.30 hours. Also,
because the London area readings on 145.525MHz at 10.00 and 12.00 hours
have now been discontinued, a single reading at say 11.00 hours is
being considered. The RSGB already has some volunteers as assistant
readers but one or two main readers are needed before this schedule can
be introduced. 2 metre volunteers need to be in the London area or
nearby Home Counties and all readers must be members of the RSGB.

Pembrokeshire RAYNET has been asked to provide communications coverage
for the Tour of Pembrokeshire Cycle Ride on 8 June. Up to 1,000 riders
will be taking part over two routes, one route is 64

miles and the other 116 miles. The control station will be GW3VEN at
Folly Farm, using frequencies of 145.225MHz and 433.7MHz. Approximately
10 stations will be participating.

There are three rallies taking place on Sunday 15 June. The Newbury
Radio Rally and Car Boot Sale will be held at the Newbury Showground,

GB0SRG will be on the air on 8 June from the Yorkshire Dales village of
Gargrave in celebration of Saint Robert who was born in Gargrave around
1100AD. The station will be activated by members of the Craven Radio
Amateur Group and will be on air from WAB square SD95 YSN on both HF
and VHF/UHF.

In 13 June, listen out for GB0CFD for Cub Fun Day at Builth Wells,
Powys.

Tamworth Amateur Radio Society is putting GB2TC, Tamworth Castle
Museums, on the air on 14 and 15 June. They will be using the HF and

The South Flanders DX Activity group will commemorate the 64th
anniversary of the D-Day landings until 9 June. F/ON6JUN/P will be on
the air near to the Pegasus Bridge Memorial Museum. They will be active
on all HF bands, especially WARC bands, using CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK.
QSL direct or via the bureau.

CS2FD will be on the air from 1200UTC on June 14 for 24 hours from
Montemor Park near Lourdes in France. The ARVM group will be using

Roland, EA8/HB9DPO, is activating the island La Palma from 7 to 14

Now the contest news

The RSGB National CW Field Day Contest will be taking place on 8 June
on 1.8 to 28MHz. Exchange is RST and serial number.

This year's SEANET Contest is also taking place on 8 June. The rules
have been simplified in an attempt to encourage greater participation.
Please see the new rules at www.seanet.cc. Modes are CW, SSB and RTTY
on 3.5 to 28MHz. Exchange is RST and serial number.

The RSGB 144MHz backpacker Contest takes place on 8 June from 0930 to
1300. All modes are permitted on the 144MHz band. Exchange is RST,
serial number and Locator.

The RSGB 432MHz Activity Contests takes place on 10 June from 2000 to
2230 using all modes. The exchange is RST, Serial Number and Locator.

On 11 June the RSGB CW Club Championships on 3.5MHz takes place from
1900 to 2030. Exchange is RS and Serial Number.

The ANARTS WW RTTY Contest will be held over the weekend 14 and 15 June
on 3.5 to 28MHz. Exchange is RST, Serial Number, UTC and CQ Zone.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 26th of May to
the 1st of June, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS and Martin Harrison,
G3USF.

One small sunspot belonging to the old cycle came and went on the 26th,
otherwise, the solar disc was spotless. Solar activity was very low
with no solar flares taking place at all. Solar flux levels averaged 68
units with barely no daily variations. The 90 day solar flux average on
the 1st remained unchanged at 71 units. X-ray flux levels remained
below the minimum reporting level everyday. Geomagnetic activity
started at quiet levels with only an Ap of 3 units on the 27. However,
on the 28th a small coronal hole disturbance arrived. Its impact was
minimal, with only 12 units reported on the most disturbed day. The
average was Ap 8 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds
increase from 330 kilometres per second on the 28th to 680 by the 31st.
Particle densities were low except for a brief sharp rise to 55
particles per cubic centimetre

th around 0300 hours on the 28 . Bz varied between minus 3 and plus 2
nanoTeslas on the quiet days and between minus 8 and plus 9 nanoTeslas
on the 28th.

And finally the solar forecast. This week the slightly more active side
of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Saying that, solar
activity is expected to continue at very low levels, however, solar
flux levels should be into the low 70's for some of the week.
Geomagnetic activity is expected to be at quiet levels all week. MUFs
during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 19MHz for the
south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be about
10MHz. Paths this week to Australia should have a maximum usable
frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 20MHz. The optimum
working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 16MHz.
The best time to try this path will be between 0800 and 1200 hours UTC.
Sporadic-E is expected to take place this week with a chance of
openings up to 144MHz taking place during the more intense openings.
