GB2RS NEWS Sunday 21st December 2008 The news headlines * RSGB News Service Schedule * Astronaut meeting in Parliament * RAYNET Personal Accident Insurance First, a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year to all our listeners. This will be the last GB2RS broadcast of 2008. But don't worry, we will be back bringing you the latest amateur radio news in the New Year. We will be transmitting again from 11 January 2009. Please note, no news will be read 28 December or 4 January. The Local News this week covers until 11 January, although a lot of clubs are closed. On Tuesday 16 December GB4FUN co-ordinator Carlos Eavis, G0AKI, attended a very special reception at the Houses of Parliament dedicated to the magic of space. The occasion was to mark the success Richard Garriott's trip to the International Space Station and all the educational science projects he carried out while aboard. Richard, who holds the callsign W5KWQ, spent a lot of time on amateur radio activities in space, including a planned contact with Budbrooke School in Warwickshire. Many of the pupils involved also attended the reception and one young boy, Matthew Morgan, gave a very moving speech about his experiences. Also at the reception was Richard's astronaut father Owen Garriott, W5LFL, the first man to operate amateur radio from space. A fuller report will appear in the February RadCom. RAYNET groups are reminded that the old Personal Accident scheme will terminate on 31 December. Only those groups who have registered their members, as per previous announcements, will be covered from 1 January. Some groups carry their own insurance, or are also members of the Network, but all others should submit details without delay. Given that the RSGB at Abbey Court will close from 23 December, details should be sent direct to gm3zyeatrsgb.org.uk, preferably as an Excel spreadsheet, giving the name of the group, the name and contact details of the controller, list of members by first name, surname, callsign if any, and age group, divided into under 16yrs, between 16 and 75 yrs, or over 75 yrs. There are a few places still available for the second Bath Buildathon is to be held on Saturday 17 January 2009. The aim of the event is to encourage newcomers to have a go at homebrewing radio equipment under the watchful eye of some very experienced radio constructors. The kit chosen for the Bath Buildathon is the Brendon DSB Transceiver from Tim Walford's Somerset range of kits. The QRP transceiver has been specifically designed for the newcomer so you can be confident that you will go home with a working 80m voice transceiver. The Buildathon is planned to run from 9am to 6pm. All soldering and test equipment will be made available on the day. The cost of the day will be £60 to include the cost of the kit. If you are interested in joining in the fun, please contact Steve Hartley, G0FUW on 01225 464394 (7-9pm weekdays), or by e-mail at G0FUWattiscali.co.uk. Today, 21 December, is the 20th anniversary of the Lockerbie RAYNET call-out in 1988. It was the biggest call-out that GB2RS news reader G4OLK has been on. He said that the memories will haunt him forever. 2 GB4BLC will be on the air as many days as possible during January as part of Bedworth Lions Club Awareness Month, when G8GMU, otherwise known as Lion President Brian, opens his home to the public to show the work of Lions Clubs locally and internationally. Part of this is done through the medium of amateur radio, which is also demonstrated. They plan to use 2m FM and, on HF, 80 through to 10m. The official opening by the Mayor of Nuneaton & Bedworth is on 12 January at 11am. Early 2009 is the target for a new joint radio service that will serve European audiences on shortwave using Digital Radio Mondiale technology. That's when the BBC World Service and the English-language division of Deutsche Welle will begin targeting Western and Central Europe with digital content that will include global news and current affairs, analysis, documentaries and cultural programs. Digital Radio Mondiale was developed in Europe as the digital broadcasting system for bands below 30MHz. Now for the news of special events We have received no details from UK special event stations this week. Here's advance notice for some special event stations that will be active before the end of the year. GB5ONG will be active between 22 December and 4 January. It is being run to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Nos Galan Races held on New Year's Eve each year at Mountain Ash near Aberdare. They will be active on 160, 80, 40 and 20m SSB and possibly PSK31, RTTY and CW. There will also be a talk in frequency of 145.400MHz available for any visitors. Operating times/schedules will be available nearer the date on www.qrz.com. Further details available at www.nosgalan.co.uk. Listen out for GB2HLB from 26 December to 22 January. This, to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of inventor Louis Braille whose tactile language for the sightless has been adapted world-wide. In dedication to the Braille bicentenary each QSO made by GB2HLB will receive a special QSL card depicting Braille and raising awareness of the Royal National Institute of Blind People. A fund raising web page can be found at www.justgiving.com/louisbraille. Japanese special event station 8J1UEC90 is on the air until 12 January. This is in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the University of Electro-Communications. QSL only via the bureau. And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources. In January and February, Philippe, F4EGS will be on the Ivory Coast, in the city of Abidjan. Listen out for TU/F4EGS. He plans to use 40 through to 10m. Next year, F6KOP will go to the Kerkennah Islands for a DXpedition. A large group of operators, around 27 of them including a UK amateur, will be active as TS7C between 8 and19 January on all bands and modes with six or seven stations. QSL via F4EGD. Andrew, a member of the RSGB affiliated Craven Radio Amateur Group, will be operational between 11 to 27 January from Embudu Island in Kaafu Atoll in the Maldives. Using the callsign 8Q7AK, he will be on SSB 3 and CW on the 40 through to 10m bands, including WARC frequencies. For comprehensive details of operating times, suggested frequencies and QSL information, please check 8Q7AK on QRZ.com. Now the contest news On 23 December from 2000 to 2230 it is the RSGB 50MHz Activity Contest. You may use all modes and the exchange must be RST, serial number and locator. 26 to 29 December sees the RSGB Christmas Cumulatives running from 1400 to 1600 each day. Using the 50, 70, 144 and 432MHz bands, you can use all modes and the exchange must be RST, serial number and locator. On 30 December from 2000 to 2230 it is the RSGB 70MHz Activity Contest. You can use all modes on the 70MHz band and the exchange must be RST, serial number and locator. The 25th Original QRP Contest takes place on 27 and 28 December from 1500UTC on the Saturday until Sunday on the Sunday. Entrants must take 9 hours minimum rest period in one or two parts. It will be held in the CW segments of the 80, 40 and 20m bands with the initial call being CQ OQRP. The exchange is RST, serial number and category. An exchange of RST is sufficient with stations not in contest. The contest idea is to promote creative or unconventional QRP-amateur radio like homebrewing or just doing it without QRO equipment. Full details can be found at www.qrpcc.de. The AMSAT Straight Key Night (SKN) on OSCAR is to be held on 1 January. Starting at 0000 and finishing at 2400. Participating is easy as there are no rules, no scoring and no need to send in a log. Just operate CW through any OSCAR between 0000 and 2400UTC on 1 January 2009, using a straight hand key. In keeping with the friendly nature of this event, all participants are encouraged to nominate someone they worked for `Best Fist'. Your nominee need not have the best fist of those you heard, just of those you worked. Please send your nomination to w2rsatamsat.org. A list of those nominated will appear in The AMSAT Journal. The First Class CW Operators Club have devised a CW activity period for Saturday 3 January that any CW operators are welcome to join in. This event is for operators using the traditional `pump' or straight key and the mechanical `bug' key. CW operators are invited to operate on the 80m, 40, and 30m bands with your straight key, bug key or any other mechanical keying device. The event will start at 0000 and finish at 2359. Please send your log by e-mail to g3vttataol.com or post to G3VTT, QTHR. The Irish Radio Transmitters Society (IRTS) 80 metres Counties Contest takes place on Thursday 1st January 2009. Rules for this contest are available for download at www.irts.ie/rules. The fourth running of the CQ DX Marathon begins at 0000UTC on 1 January and runs through 2359UTC on 31 December 2009. The goal, as always, is to work as many countries and CQ zones as possible at least once during the calendar year. Once again they will use a downloadable Microsoft Excel template which may be filled in and e-mailed to a special address as your log entry. For complete details, please visit http://cq-amateur-radio.com. 4 Now the solar report for the period from the 8th to the 14th of December, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS, and Martin Harrison, G3USF. After 22 consecutive days when the solar disc was spotless a small sunspot group appeared on the 10th. It was magnetically simple and small but despite that the group produced numerous sub-flares in the A and B class range and on the 11th produced a small C class solar flare increasing activity to low. Unfortunately, the group appeared near the west limb and 3 days later on the 12th rotated out of sight. This group belonged to the new sunspot cycle. In fact, out of the last 8 sunspot groups that have appeared 7 have belonged to the new sunspot cycle. Solar flux levels increased to 71 units on the 10th and the 12th. The average was 70 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 14th was 69 units. That's one unit up on last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum reporting level, were they have remained since last March. Geomagnetic activity was very quiet everyday. On the 9th and the 14th the Ap index was zero. The average was only Ap 2 units. Solar wind data measured at the ACE spacecraft saw speeds declined from 530 kilometres per second on the 8th to 320 by the 14th. Particle densities were low everyday and varied between 1 and 6 particles per cubic centimetre. Bz showed little movement with the quiet magnetic field and only varied between minus 6 and plus 6 nanoTeslas. And finally the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar activity is expected to be very low, however, if a sunspot group appears that could increase activity to low. Solar flux levels should be just below the 70 mark with a spotless Sun or slightly above if any sunspots do appear. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be unsettled today and tomorrow due to a small coronal hole disturbance after which quiet conditions should return for the rest of the week. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes are expected to be about 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be about 8MHz. A small but reliable winter Sporadic-E season takes place over the Christmas/New Year period on 28 and 50MHz. That leads me nicely on to wish all the GB2RS news team at HQ, all the newsreaders and listeners a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year from all on the propagation team. Also I would like to thank the Space Weather Prediction Centre for the solar data, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the ionospheric data and the British Geological survey for the magnetic data, without which this weekly report would not take place. Best seasonal wishes to all. And that's all for this week from the propagation team. 5 Next, the Local News: Please note that details of all RSGB-affiliated clubs and societies can be found on the RSGB website, including e-mail addresses and website links where known.
