The news headlines

* RSGB elects a new President
* New licence classes for new licensees in Portugal
* Radio Ethiopia causes interference on new 7MHz segment

At the May meeting of the RSGB National Council, the council elected
David Wilson, M0OBW to serve as RSGB President for 2010 and 2011. David
currently holds the Emerging Technologies and RSGB Convention portfolio
on the RSGB Board. He is also very active in the Train the Trainer
programme. A formal announcement of the appointment will appear in the
August 2009 edition of RadCom.

As of 1 June, newly-licensed amateurs in Portugal, the Azores and
Madeira will have new licence classes and corresponding prefixes. Calls
will start with CT7 for Portugal, CT8 for the Azores and CT9 for
Madeira. The novice calls will have a CS7 prefix for Portugal, CS8 for
the Azores and CS9 for Madeira. These are also called New Class 1 and
New Class 2. A third, New Class 3, will have CR7, CR8 and CR9 prefixes
for the three different entities. Some older listeners may recall that
these prefixes used to be used from Mozambique, Portuguese India and
Macau respectively. Old callsigns will be kept as they are, for example
CU1 to CU9 for the Azores. CR1, CR2 and CQ8 will be for special event
and contest callsigns.

If you regularly listen into the new 7100 - 7200kHz range in the
evening hours, then you may have noticed some interference. Starting
1630UTC and lasting about one hour, you will find on 7165kHz, or
sometimes on 7175kHz, a powerful wideband rushing noise, which is some
15kHz wide. Also very faintly you can hear the carrier of a program
below the jammer. The culprit is Radio Ethiopia. It is jamming Voice of
the Broad Masses from Eritrea on 7165kHz. Ethiopia also regularly jams
other transmissions in Amharic, for example Deutsche Welle, on 15 and
11MHz. The jamming uses a rectangular white noise signal that is some
10 to 16kHz wide. In 2008 Ethiopia commissioned 3 or 4 new
transmitters, some of which are regularly used for jamming unwanted

Expansion of the 40m band has taken another step closer in South
Africa. The Board of ICASA, the regulatory body in South Africa, have
approved the revised radio regulations for publication in the
Government Gazette. The next hurdle is the actual publication. An ICASA
spokesperson said that he expects that the revised regulations will be
published very soon. The Boland Amateur Radio Club is arranging a
competition to celebrate the expansion of the 40m band when it is
finally announced. It will be held on the first Sunday following the
publication of the Government Gazette.

On Sunday 14 June at 11am a direction finding event will be held at
Mugdock Country Park, Milngavie, north of Glasgow. The event will be on
80 metres only and will be to the IARU format. Full details are on the

A new stamp honouring amateur radio direction finding has been released
in India. At the 10th ARDF competition in Bangalore, a special cover
and a Postal Cancellation ceremony was held.

A total of 135 registrations from 18 countries have already been
received by the organisers of International Lightship & Lighthouse
Weekend. Many more are expected before the event takes place on the
weekend of 15 and 16 August. For more information including guidelines,

The Train the Trainers course that was to have been hosted by the Angel
of the North radio Club has been postponed. A new date has yet to be
fixed.

The Mid Cornwall Beacon and Repeater Group have just installed a new 2m
antenna and Heliax cable on their new mast at Hensbarrow Downs, St.
Austell. They will be testing the new antenna during the next couple of
weeks on simplex channels to establish that there are no problems with
any of the commercial transmissions from other masts on Hensbarrow
Downs. On Sunday 14 June, following the RSGB news between 10am and 4pm
local time, they will be operating full coverage tests on 145.550MHz
(or the nearest unoccupied channel) using the callsign G3MCD/A. They
would like people to report the difference between the current signal
strength of the GB3NC transmission from the old mast and the simplex
transmission from the new mast. Both transmitters will be running the
same power.

Three new amateur radio microsats have been launched and are now in
orbit. PHARMASAT-1 is from Santa Clara University and is transmitting
on 437.465MHz in AX.25 data protocol at 1200 bits per second. HAWKSAT-I
was the work of the Hawk Institute for Space Sciences and is on 437.345
MHz. POLYSAT CP6 is sponsored by the California Polytechnic State
University and on 437.365MHz with 1200 bit per second data in AX.25.

Today, Sunday 7 June, the Red Rose QRP festival takes place at Formby
Hall, Alder Street, Atherton, M46 9EY. There is talk-in on S22, free

Next weekend is particularly busy for rallies and events in the UK.
Over the weekend of 13 and 14 June, the British Amateur Television club
will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary. The event will be held at
Helledon lakes Hotel near Daventry. Main activity will be on 14 June
with a full lecture programme, outside exhibits in the car park, indoor
exhibits and traders and a bring & buy stall running from 10am until

On Sunday 14 June, the Bangor & District ARS Radio & Computer Rally

Now the news of special events

GB65RFW will be on the air until 2359 today commemorating the 2nd & 5th
battalions of the American Rangers D-Day landings in June 1944. The
station will be running log-to-web software to assist stations trying
to find it. Also a list of proposed spot frequencies will be posted on
the website www.wykeradio.org. Contact information is also on QRZ.com.

A small team will be active until 9 June from the Training Wing of 21
Signal Regiment at Colerne near Bath. They will be operating GB65BTF to
commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Bridge Too Far and GB2ASU for
the Air Support Units.

Apeldoorn DX and Contest Crew will activate an F/PA65DDAY from Juno
Beach in Normandy, France until 8 June. Depending on conditions they
will be active on 80, 40 and 20m, SSB only. QSL information on QRZ.com.

7X2DD will be active from 15 to 21 June during the International
Algerian Sahara Ham Meeting. Operations will be on all bands and modes.
A special certificate will be issued instead of a QSL card.

On the weekend of 13 and 14 June GB8WOL will be on the air from an
event called War on the Line, which is being held at the Watercress
Line in Hampshire. Operation will be on 80m on AM only 3.615MHz and QSL

The 2009 Museum Ship Weekend Event closes at 2359z on 7 June. Over 75
museum ships are participating. Activity will be on all HF bands, from
10 to 80m, using CW, SSB and PSK31. Some ships will also use AM with

F5MCC portable TH, and possibly TK5XN, will be on the air from Corsica
until 11 June. They also plan to activate several lighthouses. QSL for
F5MCC go via his home call and TK5XN via F2YT either direct or through
the bureau.

8N5I will be on the air from Shikoku Island until 15 June. QSL via the
JARL bureau.

Francois, F5JNE, will be active on Belle-Ile-en-Mer, which is IOTA
reference EU-048, between 16 and 24 June. Activity will be CW only on
40 and 20m, mainly in the evenings. QSL via F5JNE, direct or by the
French REF Bureau. Jean-Pierre, F6ITD, will be also be active as
homecall/P from the same location between 20 and 28 June. Activity will
be on the HF bands, although no 17 and 12m, on SSB only. QSL via F6ITD.

Operators Robert, F5HTR and Roger, F5LKW will be active as homecall/P
from Riou Island on 8 June. This is IOTA reference EU-095. They will
travelling in a kayak and will be active as QRP on 40 meters. Listen to

This weekend is RSGB NFD, CW only from 160m to 10m and exchange is RST
and serial number. The contest doesn't finish until 1500UTC today,
Sunday 7 June.

The British Amateur Television Club Summerfun Amateur Television
Contest finishes 1200UTC today, Sunday 7 June, on all bands from 70cm
upwards. Stations are encouraged to participate, or just look for
increased Amateur TV activity on these bands. Talkback is most likely
to be found on 144.750 FM. Details of how to enter the contest can be
found on the BATC Website, www.batc.org.uk; entrants do not need to be
BATC members.

Tuesday 9 June sees the RSGB 432MHz UK Activity Contest taking place
between 1900-2130. Using all modes the exchange is signal report,
serial number and locator.

On Wednesday 10 June, the RSGB 80m Club Championship takes place
between 1900 and 2030 using CW. The exchange is signal report and
serial number.

Saturday 13 June between 1100 and 1700UTC is the Practical Wireless
70MHz Low Power Contest. Using all modes the exchange is signal report,
serial number and locator.

The Worked All Britain 50MHz Phone contest takes place on Sunday14 June
from 0900 to 1500UTC. The exchange is report serial number and WAB
square. Contestants are encouraged to know their locator square to
enable them to exchange details with those in the RSGB Backpackers
event. Rules and logsheets are available from the Contest Manager,
G0BFJ, QTHR or from the WAB website www.worked-all-britain.co.uk.

Over the weekend 13 and 14 June the ANARTS WW RTTY contest takes place
from 0000 to 2359. Using the bands between 3.5 and 28MHz, the exchange
is signal report, UTC and CQ Zone.

Sunday 14 June is a busy day for amateur radio. Between 0900 and 1600
is the Practical Wireless 144MHz QRP Contest. Using all modes on the
band the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.

On the same day and between 0900 and 1300 it's the RSGB 144MHz
Backpackers Contest. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report,
serial number and locator.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 25th to the 31st
of May, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 1st of June.

The solar disc was spot less everyday but on the 31st a small group
emerged. From its location it looks as though this belongs to the new
sunspot cycle. Solar activity was very low with no solar flares taking
place at all. Solar flux levels declined to 67 units by the 27th but
then recovered 69 units by the 29th. The average was 68 units. The 90
day solar flux average on the 31st was 70 units. That's one unit up on
last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum reporting level
throughout. Geomagnetic activity was quiet everyday; however, around
0520 UTC on the 28th a sudden impulse arrived but was not of sufficient
strength to increase activity. The source of the impulse is unknown.
Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase
to 450 kilometres per second on the 28th in response to the sudden
impulse. Particle densities varied between 1 and 4 particles per cubic
centimetre throughout. Bz varied between minus 4 and plus 4 nanoTeslas
everyday except for the 28th which fluctuated between minus and plus 8
nanoTeslas.

There was plenty of good propagation on most bands. The stable
high-pressure system that brought so much sunshine to most parts of
Britain also sustained good extended tropo at VHF, UHF and the
microwave bands. In fact on 10GHz, a contact between OZ1FF and F6APE
took place on the 26th with a distance of 1098 kilometres making it a
new distance record for the band via rain scatter. Exchanged reports
were 51S. A sound clip from the QSO can be heard at
www.oz1ff.dk/Pages/News/News.htm. Sporadic-E showed the predicted
improvement, albeit erratically. There were some strong openings at
70MHz, particularly towards Portugal, and some double-hop events on
50MHz. Probably the most notable was a contact between G4IGO and OA4TT,
presumably by multiple-hop sporadic-E on the 28th. Also, on the 28th
contacts were made between Europe on 50MHz, and between Europe and
North America on both 28 and 50MHz.

And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to
remain at very low levels. The solar disc may display a few small
sunspot groups on some days. However, solar flux levels should be
around the 70 mark most days. Geomagnetic activity is expected to
remain at quiet levels everyday. Saying that, a small disturbance could
take place around midweek. MUFs during daylight hours at equal
latitudes should be around 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north.
The darkness hour lows should be about 10MHz. Paths this week to
Australia should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent
success rate of around 19MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90
per cent success rate will be about 15MHz. The best time to try this
path will be between 0800 and 1100 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take
place most days. Openings may just be possible on 144MHz. Be alert for
openings via multi hop Sporadic-E to the Middle East and North America,
especially during the larger openings. For the latest openings in real
