Debby Says…

I have received an e-mail from Roger and Ann Klaver. They have found an
NZART neck tie at a basketball court at the Fitzherbert Reserve, West
Harbour, Auckland. Anyone who may have dropped it there can contact me
for more information.

Remits and branch voting figures will be sent to all branch secretaries
by the end of March. I am unable to send the remits out to any person or
branch electronically beforehand.

Headquarters will be closed on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th March.

Talk soon…Debby ZL2DL

News from the President Vaughan ZL1TGC

Marlborough Branch Donation

I am delighted to report that Marlborough Branch 22 has made a donation
of $1000 towards the cost of sending our ALO, Don Wallace ZL2TLL to
Geneva for the World Radio Conference. This is a very generous donation
and I would like to thank the Executive and members of the branch very
much.

Vacancy on Council filled

My taking on the position of President created a casual vacancy in the
Northern electoral district and I’m very pleased to be able to
advise that Neill Ellice ZL1TAJ has agreed to join us on Council to fill
this vacancy. You may recall that Neill narrowly missed out on being
elected to Council during the last round of elections. Please give
Neill a warm welcome, as I am sure he will bring to Council some new
ideas and a fresh perspective which will serve us well.

Fees Review

NZART Council was keen, for budgeting purposes, to know if and when
there might be any changes to the current fees we pay for repeaters,
beacons, etc. Radio Spectrum Management have advised that a fees review
is planned but no changes to Amateur repeater, beacon and similar fees
will occur before 1 July 2015.

Factors that may influence future fees payable include the $1 million
reduction in RSM licence income by the closedown of the high power VHF
television transmitters, the rate of take up of other licences in the
UHF spectrum, costs caused by each sector, etc.

It is not know at this stage what effect the review will have on the
fees paid for Amateur licences but we have been assured that it will be
preceded by full consultation (which is likely to start in 2013) with
all users.

Commemorating ANZAC day with WIA

We have got it rolling early and the Townsville Radio Club will be
operating from a WW2 Bunker on Castle Hill and the Hill at Charters
Towers that was used as part of the huge military presence . We'll be
operating from WW2 site on the Atherton Tablelands as well.

That's great that ex HMAS Castlemaine will be in and we hope ex HMAS
Diamintina, ex HMAS Whyalla will be on air as well. I have included the
Australian Maratime Museum in Sydney so hopefully we'll have ex HMAS
Vampire or anther ship on as well, maybe some from the museums at point
Cook and others as well.

The aim is to encourage as many RADIO AMATEURS as possible to have
Amateur radio operating on the same modes, AM and CW, that were used
during World War 1, and 2 plus Korea, Malaya, Confrontation, and early
Viet Nam as an Amateur Radio salute to those servicemen and servicewomen
who then served and those still serving.

We ask that it start in the afternoon and not interfere with the morning
marches, services or reunions and simply use AM and CW on the afternoon
ets instead of the SSB.

It brings it home the difficulties that those servicemen and
servicewomen had passing all the signals etc.

Can you please distribute this info as widely as possible so as many as
possible will be involved. I’ll try and get our New Zealand and
other amateur radio organisations in the loop as well.

Regards and hoping for a successful AM and CW afternoon on the

Feedback from NZ Amateur Radio Day

Thank you to all those who assisted us to promote the hobby by working
our NZ Amateur Radio Day stations yesterday. We teamed up with local
Civil Defence and put on a public display at the Glenview Shopping Mall
complex car park,HAMILTON. Contacts were via the IRLP,National
System,APRS,70cm,2m,40m and 80m.Due to car park constraints our HF
antennas were limited to mobile whips on vehicles with extension coax
leads leading to our ops bench display areas in neighbouring gazebos. The
weather was in our favour and the public feed back was very positive
with a number of follow ups.

DXer now a Silent Key - Excerpts taken from the Daily DX Vol 16 No 047
dated 6 March 2012.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of the legendary

DXpeditioner ZL1AMO, Ron Wright. He was 75.

Ron was the 23rd Amateur Radio operator inducted into the CQ DX Hall of
Fame in 1985, as well as recently (2009) the “2nd inductee to
the NZ DX Hall of Fame”.

ZL1AMO was one of the best CW ops and operated most of his DXpeditions

exclusively on his favorite mode. His CW DXCC count was 339/346

(current/total), only needing one country to have them all on Code!
