New Kensington Ham Radio Group Goes 'Old-School' Global:

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:05 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/27928

He has to listen closely to hear through the static, but University of
Pittsburgh student Geoff Wolf can just barely make out the strained beeps
of Morse code emanating from somewhere in the south Asian country of Sri
Lanka. Wolf, of Harrisburg, belongs to the Skyview Radio Society, an
amateur ham radio group that draws members from throughout Western
Pennsylvania. Members meet at their radio station and clubhouse in New
Kensington and broadcast locally and throughout the world. "All you need is
a radio, a wire and a power source," said Larry Kelley of Murrysville, one
of about 80 society members. "People will get on and see how many folks
throughout the world they can talk to." In today's age of cellphones, the
Internet and numerous other modes of communication, it might seem quaint
that ham radio is still around. But it has a distinct advantage over many
other forms of modern communication.

Listen to Solar Storm Activity in New Sonification Video:

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:05 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/27926

(PhysOrg.com) -- What does a solar storm sound like? It's a "sonification"
of measurements from two spacecraft during the most recent storm. Take a
listen in this video. This sonification of the recent solar storm activity
turns data from two spacecraft into sound. It uses measurements from the
NASA SOHO spacecraft and the University of Michigan's Fast Imaging Plasma
Spectrometer (FIPS) on NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft at Mercury. The creator
is Robert Alexander, a design science doctoral student at the University of
Michigan and NASA fellow. The researcher who created it is Robert
Alexander, a University of Michigan design science doctoral student.
Alexander is a composer with a NASA fellowship to study how representing
information as sound could aid in data mining.

license. Based on this application, the FCC granted Wilson a General

Need Legal help NY -- Dutchess County:

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 12:57 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/27898

I am writing this letter in hopes that I may get some really needed help
and support from the ham community at large. My name is Myles N2EHG, I am a
telecommunications engineer and radio amateur. I live in a small town
outside of Poughkeepsie New York. I moved there a year ago to take care of
my mother, who is ill and needs around the clock care. My idea was to enjoy
the quiet and beauty of the area in hopes that the setting would help my
mother improve and allow me also to enjoy my only hobby, amateur radio.
