Sudden. Unexpected. A blow to his wife, Bev, and family, and to all who knew Doug personally, professionally, and indirectly through his amateur radio activities. Although licensed for almost 60 years, Doug was probably most well-known - across Australia and around the world - for his moonbounce exploits over decades, in particular with the 8.6 metre dish he commissioned in 2001. In 2006, using this dish on 1296 MHz, Doug gained a moonbounce DX record on 10 June 2006, working CT3/DL1YMK in Portugal, a distance of 18,342.3 km. /////////////////////////////////////////// Iron County Emergency Management Works to Prepare for Earthquakes: Posted: 06 Mar 2016 04:16 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36310 Whether we realize it or not, Southern Utah is earthquake country. There have been numerous small earthquakes in this area in recent years and, according to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), they provide a good reminder that people in Utah and Northern Arizona should be prepared. In the state of Utah, earthquakes come less frequently than in California, but there are a number of fault lines entirely capable of producing magnitude 7 quakes and they can't be ignored. Seismologists study earthquakes by trenching fault scarps, an active fault with surface rupture. When geomorphic setting of the fault is such that sedimentation is preserved, data on geological shifts that have occurred over time can be gathered by dating through carbon and other methods. The first weekend in February, a military presence was felt in and around the Iron County area. The National Guard's 213th Forward Support Company teamed up with Iron County Emergency Management to conduct a drill called "Operation Seismos." The 213th Forward Support Company specializes in vehicle maintenance, water purification and personnel support. The 213th was invited to Cedar City by Iron County Emergency Management to evaluate military and civilian radio communications, including ham radio operators in the area. John Higley, Emergency Management Coordinator for Iron County, said, "Overall, the exercise was very successful. We did identify some performance gaps that are certainly correctable as we work with the National Guard. An example would be better coordination of briefings with various city and county organizations." "We knew we had some equipment gaps with the amateur radio component of the Emergency Coordination Center, which we are actively working to improve in order to better function during the full scale pandemic exercise occurring March 17 here in Iron County," he added. Higley said news articles of the event reached further than expected. One news article on the exercise caught the attention of an Australian who sits on the Disaster Communications Committee for Region 3 of the International Amateur Radio Union. "Mr. Jim Linton, of Australia, contacted a local radio operator Don Blanchard and requested more information about the exercise and how the Amateur Radio operators were incorporated into the exercise. That information led to articles being published on the Wireless Institute of Australia's weekly broadcast website as well as on the IARU's website," Higley said. /////////////////////////////////////////// Wireless Telegraphy Comes to Kauai: Posted: 06 Mar 2016 04:15 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36309 In October 1899, expert electrician Fred J. Cross of Honolulu contracted with Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi's Wireless Telegraph and Signal Company to install Marconi's wireless communication system in the Hawaiian Islands. Incidentally, it was Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) who developed the first practical wireless telegraphy transmitters and receivers beginning in 1895. Cross then went on to form Inter-Island Telegraph Co. of Hawaii in December 1899 with backing from major Honolulu businesses. Inter-Island Telegraph Co. opened for business in 1901 with wireless stations established at Waialae, Oahu; Laau Point, Molokai; Keeaumoku, Lanai; Lahaina, Maui; and Mahukona, Hawaii. Work to link Kauai -- the only major Hawaiian Island not connected to Inter-Island's wireless system -- proceeded under the personal direction of manager Cross. |
