/////////////////////////////////////////// Almonte Amateur Radio Club Provides Communications for Hospice Hike: Posted: 06 May 2016 06:10 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36722 On a cool and rainy Sunday four members of the Almonte Amateur Radio Club (AARC) provided communication services along the Mill of Kintail trail for "The Hub" Hike for Hospice last Sunday May 1st. John Christensen, Stan Madore, Murray Pierce positioned themselves at various locations along the trail to ensure everyone was safe as they hiked the course. Robin Webb, club President, acted as Net Control at the starting point coordinating the reports from the three communication stations (and staying dry!). Although umbrellas were the norm for the day everyone was in good spirits knowing that hiking the trail was for a very worthwhile cause. /////////////////////////////////////////// NS Radio Operators Ready for Emergencies: Posted: 06 May 2016 06:09 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36721 With tens of thousands of people evacuated from the Fort McMurray, you can be sure amateur radio operators in Alberta are close at hand helping with communications. "Amateur radio operators, by virtue of their licensing, are required by industry Canada, should a disaster occur, to set up their equipment until they are told to stand down," said Mike Johnson, emergency measures co-ordinator for Cumberland County. "They are required by law to do that." Ham radio operators from throughout the Maritimes and Newfoundland, were at the E.D. Fullerton Municipal Building in Upper Nappan on Saturday for a technical symposium. "This is part of the process of training amateur radio operators about the latest types of technology, so that, if they ever are called upon, they are able to fulfill their duties," said Johnson. /////////////////////////////////////////// Longtime Emergency Volunteers Recognized by Province: Posted: 06 May 2016 06:09 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36720 Two North Shore residents and one of its most revered former volunteers are being feted by the province for their contributions to public safety and emergency preparedness. Bridget Ann Milsom, a 20-year veteran of North Shore Rescue, and George Merchant, a pioneer of local ham radio and emergency communications, have both been bestowed 2016 Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer Awards. Milsom joined North Shore Rescue in 1996 and, within a year, became the team's training officer. After four years, Milsom became the first woman to lead the team in North Shore Rescue's history. She was also highly involved in the BC Search and Rescue Association for 12 years, director for training of the BC and Yukon Saint John Ambulance, and a life member of the First Aid Ski Patrol. Merchant was a founding member of the North Shore Amateur Radio Club and the British Columbia Amateur Radio Co-ordination Council, a province-wide group that brings HAM clubs and individuals together, and he has been a member of the North Shore's Emergency Communications Team since its creation. /////////////////////////////////////////// Chasing Storms a Passion for Wadena Man: Posted: 06 May 2016 06:08 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36719 Matt Koscielski has been interested in weather since he was a child. That interest led him to storm chasing, which has become a huge part of his life. "I've been an avid storm chaser for 11 years," he said. Koscielski is a trained Skywarn Spotter for the National Weather Service, a licensed Ham radio operator and has training in several other weather-related fields. "It's a hobby for me but it's really more of a public service," he said. "I keep an eye on the sky and during severe weather I track and report the conditions." |
