Utah County Ham Radio Club Draws Statewide Attention:

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 05:26 PM PDT

There is a large population of amateur radio hobbyists in Utah County,
commonly known as ham radio operators. "A few years ago when I started the
program for Orem citizens to get prepared, they were talking about starting
a club and I said, 'I'll host you,'" said JoAnna Larsen, Orem city's
emergency manager. Larsen oversees emergency preparedness both for the
municipality and its residents, preparing them for any emergency such as a
natural disaster or a terrorist attack. The Utah Valley Amateur Radio Club
officially organized Feb. 5 with the call sign K7UVA. A call sign is
similar to a key or phone number used to contact someone. All licensed
amateur radio operators have a call sign. "It's more like a station number
like KSL, FM100, that kind of thing," said Noji Ratzlaff, interim club
president. His call sign? KN0JI. In less than six months, the club has
amassed more than 340 members who hail from Lehi to Payson, and it has
already passed one of the oldest and largest clubs in the state in
membership numbers. "We have 340 and that's because there is no other club
in Utah County other than the one at BYU (membership 12)," Ratzlaff
said. "For a long time to go to a club meeting you had to drive clear to
Salt Lake or to Cedar City and St. George. That's why it's grown so fast."
Having a locally-based ham radio club has also sparked interest among those
who have been interested but uninvolved in the past.

Radio Ham Adrian's Rich Legacy:

Sale of enthusiast's equipment boosts charity funds: A local radio group
has helped boost funding towards Cancer Research. The Newbury and District
Amateur Radio Society (NADARS) handed over a cheque of £1,000 to the
charity last week. The money was raised after the family of Highclere
resident Adrian Aylward contacted the society to help it dispose of his
collection of radio gear. The items included electronic test equipment and
components which Mr Aylward had requested should be passed to friends and
to those who could make good use of them. A 'silent auction' was held with
members of NADARS and the remaining items sold at the Newbury Radio Rally,
held at the Newbury Showground on June 19. The family and society agreed
that the money raised would be split between Cancer Research UK and NADARS.
Family representative, Jonathan Smithers, said: "Adrian would have been
happy that we have helped to improve the lives of those still living with
cancer and also encouraged those with a curiosity about what can be
achieved through electronics.

which specialize in new equipment and supplies, to radio owners looking to
sell or trade gear with other radio owners. The radio club was formed in
1976 in Hampton and held its first gathering in 1979. Club member Walter
Murphy said the club currently has about 110 members, primarily from Sussex
County although there are members from Pennsylvania, New York and adjoining

Mega-Link Expands Amateur Radio Horizons:

A statewide, mega-link amateur radio connection gained a new link last
month, giving local amateur radio new access to the southern part of
Roosevelt County. According to the Greyhound Amateur Radio Club Vice
President Billy Bagwell, the northern part of Roosevelt County has been
covered by a link on the Eastern New Mexico University campus, but there
has been no coverage for southern Roosevelt County. Bagwell said this
change offers a much larger span of help during emergencies. He said if
power is lost or communications with dispatchers shut down, the local
amateur radio operators will be able still to communicate through this new
link. This link, located on an 180-foot tower called Redlake on a mesa
between Elida and Dora, is high enough up that its line of sight goes as
far as Littlefield, Texas, on one side and the Ruidoso mountains in Lincoln
County on the other. "Short of a tornado hitting those towers directly, we
have amateur frequency communications over the entire county, part of Curry
(County), DeBaca, over to Chaves and all the way to Lincoln," said Bagwell.
Bagwell said this link is similar to those that were used in states of
crisis, such as during Hurricane Katrina. He said these can be a fail safe
when all other means of communication are overloaded or out of service.
Keith Wattenbarger, Roosevelt County's emergency management director, said
the amateur radio is not the only advantage the county will receive from
this new link. He said he is working towards getting licenses for a public
service emergency management channel.
