Antennas, Feedlines, Towers & Rotors
/////////////////////////////////////////// designing for skip on lesser acreage Posted: 26 Feb 2017 01:45 AM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...creage.556892/ Hello, I posted awhile back (as my handle implies - I am Not Yet A Ham ) seeking some related advice, some of which gave me ideas, some of which refined my position a bit more. Super short version - I am looking to either purchase, or/and influence the purchase of rural land (on which im allowed to plant an antenna and shack) upon which I am hoping to be able to play with HF communications in the future, even though I am not yet VHF licensed to transmit. (receiving doesnt count but... designing for skip on lesser acreage /////////////////////////////////////////// Help choosing a roll up j pole. Posted: 25 Feb 2017 11:20 PM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...j-pole.556907/ Im getting a little overwhelmed at the choices. Im looking for a solid roll up j pole that will work on 2m with a HT. Im in college so I need one that will work on a budget and in or around my apartment. /////////////////////////////////////////// Capacitance range of a 12-plate 5" butterfly air variable? Posted: 25 Feb 2017 09:08 PM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...riable.556879/ Anyone know the range of a 12 plate butterfly cap with 5" plates? I used to be able to figure out the capacitance min/max via Bob, VE3UKs online calculator but his cap site has been under construction for ages---no more calculator there. The rotor/stator plate spacing is 0.5626" and wide enough for 14kv peaks as I seem to recall; what I really need to determine is the minimum capacitance so I can possibly remove a set or two or three so I can tune to 10M if needed (this is... Every article I read is different. Disclaimer: 1. I know there is no "BEST" antenna 2. I know I will end up with a compromise antenna 3. I know I probably cant get what I want with a retiree on SS low budget 4. I know I probably cant get what I want being in a small condo with the usual HOA restrictions 4. I know that I probably wont get out with only my max 100... 80 Meter ONLY Antenna Search /////////////////////////////////////////// New Diamaond CR8900A Antenna - Do you have one? Posted: 25 Feb 2017 08:03 PM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...ve-one.555684/ I am replacing my antenna, an older 8900A and just saw a picture of the new fold over that they started shipping sometime last year. Has anybody bought one of these? What are your thought, this one or the old style? Is that a locking nut I see to keep it in the pocket? TIA 73s /////////////////////////////////////////// Strange resonant frequency on 80m OCFD Posted: 25 Feb 2017 06:46 PM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...m-ocfd.556901/ I am putting up an OCFD fed at 20% from one end and approximately 137 feet long. It has a two-core 4:1 current balun (impedance transformer, really) at the feedpoint. W8JI suggests that with that balun, it should have low SWR on 80, 40, 30 (close, around 10.7 MHz), 20, 15, 12, 10 meters. I put the antenna up in a tree with the feedpoint around 40 feet above ground and the two ends coming down as an inverted vee. I quickly checked the SWR with my rig and it looked really bad on 80m, great on... Strange resonant frequency on 80m OCFD /////////////////////////////////////////// New Ham needs antenna plan. Posted: 25 Feb 2017 04:58 PM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...a-plan.554581/ As the title implies, Im fresh meat So fresh, in fact, I dont even take the exams until the end of the month, and am currently grinding my way through the General book. Im also a guy who needs to apply skills to actually learn them, so Im trying to kill two birds with one stone and develop an antenna plan for the QTH. Right now my primary HF interests are local/regional phone and maybe some data work. Seeing how Im starting on the bad side of the solar cycle, Im focusing on the 40m... New Ham needs antenna plan. /////////////////////////////////////////// RG8X Return Loss Spec Posted: 25 Feb 2017 10:56 AM PST http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thre...s-spec.556163/ Does anyone have any idea what the return loss of a 50 ohm terminated 100 ft length of RG8X should look like over the HF range? Im trying to come up with a minimum RL number I can use to test out cables I already have in conduits. I cant find any manufacturer specs on this. Anyone know why its not specified? What I have found on some coax brands is an impedance tolerance spec, typically +/- 2 ohms. This would work out to an SWR of 1.04:1 if everything else was perfect. Whats reality? |
