This group is sticking with old-fashioned vacuum tubes and antennas. Hundreds came to the Civic Auditorium in La Porte on Saturday to swap stories and hard-to-find electronic parts at the annual Cabin Fever Hamfest sponsored by the La Porte County Amateur Radio Club. Given the remarkable evolution in communications, no one would be surprised to see interest dwindling in vintage radios. Many who poked around in dusty boxes at the show Saturday recalled tinkering with electronics as kids in a way that doesn't seem to interest younger generations as much. But club president Brian Salzer said the hobby still has life, and in the past couple of years he's see a resurgence. Although this is one of the only electronic swap meets left in northern Indiana, those who attend are avid. "There are some good deals to be had here," he said. "A lot of this stuff you can't buy on the Internet." Emergency services still rely on ham radio operators for communications during natural disasters or when there are extended power outages, a service members of the club are happy to provide. Proceeds from the swap meet help pay for the maintenance of two repeaters in the county that help bounce high-frequency radio signals off the ionosphere to places as far away as Japan, Europe, Canada and even Antarctica. /////////////////////////////////////////// Ham Radio Club Heard from a Bike Ride in Italy to a Battleship in Hawaii: Posted: 26 Feb 2017 04:06 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38719 WAXAHACHIE -- During a recent meeting, David Shuford and Jim Hasse presented Ellis County Amateur Radio Club (ECARC) President Robert Crosby and members with a check for $2,000 for their participation in the Tour d'Italia bike rally on June 18, 2016. Shuford thanked the members for their roles in providing communications and as SAGS (support and gear). SAGs drive around in front of, or behind, groups of bike riders making sure they remain safe. Should they decide they cannot make it any further, SAGs are the ones who pick the rider up and bring them back to the start-finish line. The next Tour d'Italia bike rally is set for June 17, 2017. In other news, club members Leo (KW5P) and Sharon (K5SMW) Wrobel were in Honolulu, Hawaii at the end of January. While there, they met with members of the Battleship Missouri Radio Club and were able to work the radio in the original radio room of the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor as guest operators. /////////////////////////////////////////// Amateur Radio Roundtable Live Tuesdays: Posted: 25 Feb 2017 04:00 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38718 This week on Amateur Radio Roundtable, Rich Richard Moseson, W2VU editor of CQ magazine will be giving us a look into next month's issue.
