/////////////////////////////////////////// Tune Into this Invaluable Hobby: Posted: 03 Mar 2017 04:02 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38751 Hyderabad: From a friend in the neighbourhood to an astronaut floating in outer space, this radio can keep everyone connected. Yet, this personal hobby that doubles up as an extremely handy tool for disaster management remains in the shadows. Amateur radio (Ham radio), a key wireless communication facility, is little known among the public, and remembered by administrators only in times of disasters. Interesting, easy to get trained and affordable to own and use, Ham radio has less than 1,000 enthusiasts making use of it in the city. "The potential of amateur radio is not appreciated in the country. In a global community of 3 million Hams (amateur radio operators), less than 30,000 are from India," laments S Ram Mohan, Director, the National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR), Hyderabad. All that one needs to become a Ham is to clear an examination and receive a license from the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing of the Ministry of Communications. "A call sign that is the unique identity of a Ham is issued by the WPC using which one can start going wireless free of cost," he said. The exam to issue licenses is conducted every alternate month. The NIAR has a club station where a license holder can just drop in and log in with his call sign, free of cost. "It hardly demands any expertise and most can pick up with a three-day orientation," says Ram Mohan. /////////////////////////////////////////// Licensed Ham Radio Operators will be Traveling to Remote Areas of Africa: Posted: 03 Mar 2017 04:01 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38750 Africa is one of the biggest continents in the world and there are various countries in this beautiful continent. Expedition experts those who carry ham radios along with them always showcase interest to travel through dangerous terrains of various countries and this month they have chosen the country of Ghana which is one of the remote places in Africa. It is difficult to explore the hilly terrains and mountainous slopes of Ghana without ham radios. These certified and licensed ham radio operators will be staying on the remotest places like deserted hills for a short time to test the signal strengths from Ghana to other parts of the world. They will be operating from high altitudes and communicating various messages to other licensed radio operators those who are staying in both eastern and western countries. Since adventurers consider that 9G5X tour quite risky and dangerous they carry several safety equipment and also ham radios to communicate with nearest stations during catastrophe or distress. Republic of Ghana is very near to equator and the climatic condition will be extremely hot. There will be water, food and material shortage since it is poverty stricken country. But the expedition experts will withstand the cruel temperature and stand under the blistering sun for hours together till they finish their task. There are risky waterfalls, beaches and also ancient museums and monuments in this exotic locale. The experts will also have fun under the sun when they visit Ghana. Ham radios are extremely powerful equipment that will transmit signals instantly to the nearest stations and alert the rescue officials. Signals originating from ham will also travel to deep space and return back the communication. It is interesting to note that many aeronautical, marine and space communication team use this wonderful radio for the sole purpose of communicating important SOS messages. The radio will send the signals instantly and also receive them from nearby radio stations. People those who like adventure and mountaineering trips are aware about dx expedition trips and the risks that are involved in it. /////////////////////////////////////////// Foundations of Amateur Radio -- #91: Posted: 03 Mar 2017 03:14 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38749 "If they're shooting at you - you know you're doing something right!" - keyboard warriors are happy to attack, but rarely provide any contribution of note, other than to point out spelling errors and explain how they've been wounded by something you said. /////////////////////////////////////////// VK6WIA -- NewsWest, 5 March 2017: Posted: 03 Mar 2017 03:13 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38748 This is a special broadcast for the VK Amateur Radio Community about the Wireless Institute of Australia Board Election which is currently under way.
