Post Malone and the New CHR

Posted: 06 Sep 2019 03:51 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/ross/180373...d-the-new-chr/

During the morass of Top 40 music in 2018—the lack of tempo, the
repetitiveness of the music, the chopped-up vocal samples, the overall
claustrophobia of “trap pop”—there was, in particular, the omnipresence of
Post Malone.
In summer 2018, I had to monitor two major market CHRs when “Rockstar,”
“Psycho,” and “Better Now” were all in play at radio. Those songs were
released sequentially, but the combination of Malone’s burgeoning stardom,
the weaker available product, and older songs rebounding in callout
research to fill a void, meant that some major market stations might have
two of the three in power rotation at once.
One of the two CHRs played two of Malone’s three songs in the space of an
hour. The competitor played all three. I asked three female co-workers in
their twenties: “How do you feel about three Post Malone songs in an hour?
Is it OK because he’s hot right now?” But they were adamant that it was too
much.
Such was the CHR PD’s dilemma of a year ago. You couldn’t deny the audience
what they clearly wanted. But the songs themselves contributed nothing in
terms of tempo or energy to the format. (“Better Now,” with a little
bounciness, felt like Daft Punk by comparison to the other two.) And it
wasn’t so great a time for CHR ratings that you could dismiss this as my
crotchety-old-man concern.
Then came “Sunflower”—bouncy and with its nod to “Paper Planes”—and “Wow.”
Each had more energy than Malone’s 2018 hits, and besides, other things
were starting to happen with CHR music.
Then came “Goodbyes” and I didn’t mind, because other things were still
happening with CHR music. And, hey, I didn’t say I didn’t want anybody to
ever release a ballad ever again.
Then came “Circles”—the kind of mid-to-uptempo pop/rock song that hasn’t
been so present in the format lately, unless it comes from somebody like
Lil Peep, who defies the profile of a pop/rock act. (Then again, there are
also several such songs on Taylor Swift’s Lover.
In fact, there’s sort of a pop/rock EP embedded on the Hollywood’s Bleeding
album, released this morning, with “Allergic” and “A Thousand Bad Times”
joining “Circles.” “Allergic” is particularly interesting—melding familiar
pieces from both Hip-Hop and Pop/Rock into something attention-getting.
Post Malone has inspired so much commentary, online and elsewhere, that it
informs the album’s other standout cut, “Internet,” with its declaration “I
don’t get on the internet anymore.” That’s as good a statement on the
tenor-of-our-troubled-times as any artist has managed. Malone is
undoubtedly tired about arguing whether he’s a Hip-Hop or a pop artist. I
will only say that his shapeshifting is what makes him capable of making
surprisingly good uptempo pop/rock, now that he’s chosen to do so.
At this writing, “Circles” is off to a great start by any measure, debuting
at No. 25 and up by more than 2,800 spins. It’s also the No. 1 song on
Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits.
In the past, uptempo pop/rock titles have been quickly seized upon by CHR
PDs, and propelled quickly into a callout research buzzsaw within weeks,
particularly Lil Peep/ILoveMakonen/Fall Out Boy’s “I’ve Been Waiting.” But
that was before “Sucker,” “If I Can’t Have You,” “Bad Guy,” and “I Don’t
Care” proved that tempo and pop had not become completely inimical to a
contemporary listener’s tastes. And because Hollywood’s Bleeding has so
many viable songs, radio can deal with them in the same buffet table manner
that it’s picking and choosing from the new Ed Sheeran, for instance.
This is the sort of off-the-cuff first morning analysis that I might do
better to hold for a week, but I feel like discussing it with you now. And
it would certainly be something if the voice of last year’s existential
depression in pop music feels better now (better now) and becomes one of
the people who leads us out of it.

Nevada Public Radio Shuts Down NV89 Reno As CEO Resigns

Posted: 06 Sep 2019 03:15 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/1...s-ceo-resigns/

Facing a budget shortfall, Nevada Public Radio has pulled the plug on AAA
89.1 NV89 89.1 KVNV Sun Valley/Reno NV.

The move comes along with the resignation of Nevada Public Radio CEO Flo
Rogers and the appointment of former Chairman Jerry Nadal as interim CEO.
All four on-air staffers at KVNV have been let go including PD/morning host
Malayna Joy, Music Director/afternoon host Gia DeSantis, and hosts David
Nadel and Jake Wagner. The station has flipped to a temporary simulcast of
Public News/Talk 88.9 KNPR Las Vegas, however the organization is planning
to sell KVNV and its other licenses in Northern Nevada and Utah including
90.3 KSGU St. George.

KVNV launched in April 2017 as a competitor to Lotus AAA 100.1 KTHX.

Nevada Public Radio is facing significant business challenges that have
resulted in severe cash flow issues. We are working with our attorneys and
external advisors to help navigate through this challenging situation.

As of today, our CEO, Flo Rogers is stepping down so an interim CEO can
bring the necessary level of financial and legal expertise currently needed
to allow us to move ahead effectively in stabilizing Nevada Public Radio in
order to continue serving our audiences. Our former Board of Directors’
Chair, Jerry Nadal, has agreed to serve as Interim CEO beginning September
23, 2019. Between now and September 23, our Board Treasurer will oversee
the financial operations and the Board Governance Committee Chair will
oversee the organization’s business management. During this transition
period Flo Rogers has graciously agreed to assist the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is implementing major cost-cutting efforts while
planning a restructure of the organization to increase efficiency and
revenues. As part of this strategy, we are reviewing and analyzing every
operational expense and eliminating all such expenses that are not
absolutely essential to ensure continued operations.

We also, sadly, laid off all four of our NV89 (our Reno station) staff
members, will no longer air the music discovery format and will instead
remotely broadcast our KNPR program schedule on NV89. We had great hopes
for NV89 and worked very hard to seek out community financial support in
Reno with only modest success. Additionally, we are exploring the sale of
Northern Nevada and Utah assets.

We are confident that we can turn things around with the continued
oversight of the Board of Directors and under the leadership of Jerry Nadal
and the support of our audience and donors.
