Michael Hill will join the station as Morning Edition anchor. Hill joins WNYC from WNJM/WNJB-TV where he has served as an anchor and correspondent since 2014. He also is a fill-in anchor for PBS Newshour Weekend and host of Newark Today on Jazz 88.3 WBGO Newark NJ. Hill will take the position on WNYC that had been held by Richard Hake until his death last April. Sean Carlson, who has been serving as interim All Things Considered host since Jami Floyd moved to lead the stations new Race Justice unit last fall, will take on the role permanently. Carlson joined the station in 2015 and has worked on the stations evening, weekend and magazine shows during his tenure. He has been living at a hotel near the station since last March to be on-call 24/7 during the COVID pandemic. Prior to joining WNYC, Carlson served as a host at WDDE Dover DE and host/reporter at KRBD Ketchikan AK. WNYC’s Editor in Chief Audrey Cooper made the announcement in the following memo: Dear NYPR colleagues, I’m excited to announce that after a thoughtful search, we have found the next hosts for our flagship news programs: Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Michael Hill, an award-winning journalist and New Jersey native, will be the new voice of Morning Edition. Michael comes to us from New Jersey’s PBS station, NJTV/NJ Spotlight News, where he has worked as anchor, correspondent and multimedia journalist since 2014. He is also a fill-in host for PBS NewsHour Weekend and the host of Newark Today, a civic affairs show that airs on the legendary jazz station, WBGO. Before that, Michael hosted and reported the news in New Orleans, Dallas-Fort Worth, Baltimore and New York. Michael was a 2018 National Fellow of the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism and produced a five-part series, “Trauma’s Tragedy and Treatment.” That year, he also received the Radio Public Affairs Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists for a broadcast featuring Newark’s four living elected mayors. Michael is a consummate professional and prides himself in being a team player on occasion, he has acted as videographer for colleagues’ newsgathering. But my favorite part of Michael’s bio is the line that states: “Hill feels the truth is worth the pursuit.” He will officially start on Monday, Feb. 8, and he’ll make his Morning Edition debut a few weeks later. As host, Michael will preside over New York City’s most listened-to morning drive radio show, and the daypart with WNYC’s largest audience. It’s a critical role, and I’m excited to introduce Michael to you and our listeners. The new host of All Things Considered is someone you already know. Sean Carlson will take a permanent seat in the chair, which he has been helping to keep warm since Jami Floyd vacated it to launch and lead the new Race Justice unit last fall. Since arriving at WNYC in 2015, Sean has been something of a Swiss Army knife of hosts: He has worked evenings, weekends, on the magazine shows, and as a fill-in on The Takeaway. When WNYC moved most of its broadcast operations offsite last March due to the pandemic, Sean was one of a handful of staffers who stayed nearby, living in a hotel room with his cat and being on call nearly 24 hours a day to ensure the station could remain on the air. In an unthinkable crisis, we relied on Sean to bring our listeners the news and information they needed, always with his engaging, calm style. He was also part of a team that helped to cover Morning Edition in the wake of Richard Hake’s death. His promotion is effective immediately. Prior to joining WNYC, Sean worked as a host at WDDE in Dover, Delaware, and as a host and reporter at KRBD in Ketchikan, Alaska. Sean is also a New Jersey native, although he now lives in Brooklyn. It took us a long time to get to these important choices. We must recognize the tremendous efforts of our other colleagues Kerry Nolan, Lance Luckey, Rebeca Ibarra, Julianne Welby, Yasmeen Khan, and Miyan Levenson who stepped up to host during these extraordinary times. Most especially, I want to give special recognition to David Furst, who has been a regular host of Morning Edition for several months. He is an incomparable and unflappable colleague, and we could not have gotten through this period without his help. He deserves and has our deepest appreciation. Please join me in thanking all the people who helped in this process and in congratulating Michael and Sean on their new jobs. Sincerely, Audrey /////////////////////////////////////////// Pair of Radio Stations Included In $925 Million TV Sale Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:18 AM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...llion-tv-sale/ As part of its $925 million purchase of Quincy Media, Gray Television will add a pair of radio stations in Quincy IL. Gray will add Sports 1440 WGEM/98.9 W255CY and News/Talk 105.1 WGEM-FM Quincy. The radio stations are part of a cluster in what was Quincy Medias home market that included WGEM-TV and two local newspapers. WGEM-TV, whose channels air NBC, Fox, CW and MeTV programming will be included in the sale, while the newspapers will not. Gray Television owns one other radio station. Regional Mexican La Ley 104.7 KTXC LaMesa/Midland TX was one of two included in Grays 2018 purchase of Raycom. A second station in Amarillo was sold in 2019. Gray Television, Inc. (“Gray” or “ we”) (NYSE: GTN) announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Quincy Media, Inc. (“ Quincy” or “ QMI”) for $925 million in cash. Upon closing the transaction, Gray will own television stations serving 102 television markets that collectively reach 25.4 percent of US television households, including the number-one ranked television station in 77 markets and the first and/or second highest ranked television station in 93 markets according to Comscore’s average all-day ratings for calendar year 2020. “We are honored and humbled to be selected by Quincy’s shareholders to acquire their terrific company,” said Hilton H. Howell, Jr., Gray’s Executive Chairman and CEO. “We are very excited to welcome their dedicated journalists, account executives, and technologists to the Gray family. With the addition of these professionals and their stations, Gray will become a stronger company with an even larger platform of high quality television stations to better serve the public interest first.” “Many of our shareholders, board members and employees are descendants of two families who have been in the company for 95 years and in the media business for over 100 years. The focus has always been on serving our communities with the best in news, public service and community involvement. It is a legacy of which we are very proud,” said Ralph M. Oakley, President/CEO of QMI. “While this is the end of a long and successful chapter, it also represents a wonderful new chapter for the communities we serve and our employees with the acquisition of the stations by Gray. They are great operators and people and our philosophies very much mirror one another.” QMI is a family-owned media company headquartered in Quincy, Illinois, that owns and operates high quality television stations and leading local digital platforms in 16 markets primarily in the Midwest. Like Gray, Quincy’s portfolio of best-in-class television stations maintain local control over programming and operational decisions and have reputations for a commitment to excellence in local news operations, programming, community engagement and public service. Gray believes that the deep similarities between Gray and Quincy in terms of company cultures, award-winning journalistic commitments, and exceptional community service will help ensure a smooth integration of the acquired stations. Through the transaction announced today, Gray will acquire the following television stations: WPTA (ABC/NBC) and WISE (CW) in Fort Wayne, Indiana (DMA 104) WEEK (NBC/ABC/CW) in Peoria, Illinois (DMA 118) WREX (NBC/CW) in Rockford, Illinois (DMA 132) KBJR (NBC/CBS) and KDLH (CW) in Duluth, Minnesota (DMA 136) KTIV (NBC/CW) in Sioux City, Iowa (DMA 147) KTTC (NBC/CW) in Rochester-Mason City, Minnesota-Iowa (DMA 156) WBNG (CBS/CW) in Binghamton, New York (DMA 158) WVVA (NBC/CW) in Bluefield-Beckley, West Virginia (DMA 162) WGEM (NBC/FOX/CW) in Quincy, Illinois (DMA 172) To facilitate prompt regulatory approvals, Gray has elected to divest Quincy’s high quality television stations in the following markets in which Gray also owns a full-power television station: Tucson, Arizona (DMA 75) Madison, Wisconsin (DMA 80) Paducah-Harrisburg, Kentucky-Illinois (DMA 91) Cedar Rapids, Iowa (DMA 92) La Crosse-Eau Claire, Wisconsin (DMA 123) Wausau-Stevens Point, Wisconsin (DMA 134) Upon the issuance of this press release, Wells Fargo Securities will begin a formal process to market the divestiture stations to qualified third parties. The divestitures may take the form of cash sales, swaps involving other television stations, or a combination of cash and swaps. Interested parties should contact Wells Fargo Securities directly and should not contact Gray or Quincy about the divestiture opportunities. In addition to the stations above, Gray will acquire Quincy’s Heroes & Icons affiliate WSJV in South Bend, Indiana (DMA 98) as well as WGEM(AM)/-FM in Quincy, Illinois. Gray will not acquire Quincy’s newspaper operations, which will be divested prior to the Gray/ Quincy closing. The parties expect to close their transaction following receipt of regulatory and other approvals in the second or third quarter of 2021. Gray expects that the Quincy transaction will be immediately accretive to Gray’s free cash flow per share. Including expected year-one annualized synergies of approximately $23 million, the transaction purchase price represents a multiple of approximately 6.9 times a blended average of Quincy’s 2019/2020 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Gray intends to finance the transaction, net of divestiture proceeds, with cash on hand and/or new debt. Wells Fargo has provided a debt financing commitment for an incremental loan to finance up to the full purchase price of $925 million. Gray anticipates that its expected strong free cash flow generation throughout 2021 should allow Gray to continue to deleverage its capital structure following the closing. Gray expects that its total leverage ratio, net of all cash and net of proceeds from divestiture sales, would approximate 4.0 times trailing eight-quarter operating cash flow (as defined in our current senior credit facility), including estimated synergies, at year-end 2021. The transaction has been approved unanimously by the Boards of Directors of both Gray and Quincy. No Gray shareholder vote will be required. Wells Fargo Securities, LLC served as financial advisor to Quincy. Cooley LLP served as primary legal counsel for Gray. Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP and Scholz, Loos, Palmer, Siebers and Duesterhaus LLP served as legal counsel for Quincy. Gray currently owns and/or operates television stations and leading digital properties in 94 television markets. Gray’s television stations cover approximately 24 percent of US television households and broadcast over 400 separate programming streams, including roughly 150 affiliates of the Big Four broadcast networks. Gray also owns video program production, marketing, and digital businesses including Raycom Sports, Tupelo- Raycom, and RTM Studios, the producer of PowerNation programs and content. /////////////////////////////////////////// Mark Chernoff To Step Down As WFAN Program Director Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:05 AM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...gram-director/ Entercom has announced that Mark Chernoff will step down as Vice President of Sports Programming and Program Director of Sports 660 WFAN/101.9 WFAN-FM New York once a replacement is named later this year. Chernoff has programmed WFAN since 1993 after stints programming Rock 105.5 WDHA-FM Dover NJ, 102.7 WNEW New York and 92.3 K-Rock WXRK New York. He would later add oversight of WNEW and WXRK again at later times in its history and hold executive positions for CBS Radio and Entercom. Entercom New York VP/Market Manager Chris Olivero, who began his career as a board-op working for Chernoff at WFAN, wrote the following memo making the announcement: Today, I’d like to share significant and meaningful news regarding WFAN. After nearly 30 years of unmatched success, our colleague and industry programming icon, Mark Chernoff, will step down from day-to-day oversight of WFAN and CBS SPORTS RADIO later in 2021 after a worthy successor has been identified – which trust me will be no easy task.* Since no one knows the job better, Mark will be a member of the search committee for the next sports content lead for both brands and, until that time, will remain fully responsible for all operations. Also, Mark will continue on as an advisor to WFAN after the search and transition is complete. I was lucky enough to first meet Mark in 1998 in his windowless sub-sub-basement office out at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens. I was a college grad groveling for part-time board op shifts at WFAN. That began a relationship that has evolved into one of the most rewarding, important and genuine friendships of my entire life. One that I have and always will cherish. When people think of WFAN, names like Imus, ‘Mike The Mad Dog’ or Boomer often come to mind, but no name has been more responsible for the consistent excellence of THE FAN than “Chernoff.” Again, nothing is changing right now, so business as usual. But it was important for Mark that we share this news well in advance with all of you as we begin this process. And, of course, when the time is right, we all look forward to celebrating Mark for a career of contributions to our New York cluster unlike no other. Thanks all for appreciating this special moment, Chris * /////////////////////////////////////////// Radio One Promotes Trio To VP/Radio Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:52 AM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...o-to-vp-radio/ Radio One has announced the promotion of three market managers to the role of Vice President of Radio.
