1 GB2RS NEWS Sunday 12 August

The news headlines

* Scout station GB100J talks to astronauts

* OFCOM publishes proposals for 10GHz

* HF Convention approaches On the evening of Saturday 4 August, ten
Scouts spoke to astronaut Clayton Anderson aboard the International
Space Station. The Scouts operated as GB100J from the World Scout
Jamboree camp near Chelmsford. The ISS link was facilitated by Carlos
Eavis, G0AKI, and Howard Long, G6LVB. The Scouts asked Clayton, KD5PLA,
diverse questions including what happens to your tears when you cry in
space.

Running from 27 July to 8 August, the Jamboree attracted over 40,000
Scouts, venturers, leaders and staff. More than 500 packed the tent
where the contact took place. Hundreds more listened to the proceedings
from outside.

OFCOM have recently published proposals with relevance to the 3cm band.
The proposals concern the award and auction of spectrum at 10GHz to
40GHz. One range of frequencies under consideration coincides with the
3cm Amateur Satellite Service allocation. Details are on the Ofcom web
site and specific links can be found in the News section of the RSGB
web site.

A reminder about the RSGB HF Convention on 12 to 14 October. This
year's convention is at a new venue, Wyboston Lakes, in Bedfordshire.
As usual there is a full lecture programme and the chance to meet the
world's top HF operators and DXers. Full details of the convention are
at www.rsgb.org/hfc. Listeners may like to know that the Early Bird
booking discount offer ends on Tuesday 14 August.

The Eastbourne and Wealden RAYNET Group is setting out to find fresh
faces to sign up. It has one of the busiest event calendars in the
country and an active engineering committee. The committee investigates
various operating modes and automatic position reporting systems.

The group itself has been established for many years. Licensed new
members are preferred although SWL's are also needed to assist in
logging and other duties. Age is no barrier to membership.

If you live in East Sussex or the Kent and West Sussex borders and
would like to join, make contact by email to
or telephone to 01323 845418.

On 26 August, 1500 riders are expected to be cycling from Seahouses to
Prior's Haven at Tynemouth for the Chris Lucas Trust in aid of
Children's Cancer. East Durham RAYNET is the control group for the
event, with assistance provided by North West Durham, South West
Durham, Sunderland and Northumberland RAYNET groups. The Group request
additional assistance for this event. Anyone available to help can
contact the Deputy Controller Mr Owen Smith on 0191 569 3484 or 07906
965787 with their details and availability for the event. The
organisers have a website for the event at
www.chrislucastrust.com.

Foyle and District Amateur Radio Club recently travelled to St Angelo
airport in Enniskillen to run a station during for the jet world
masters model aircraft competition. The club was there for the final
two days

2 of the event. Propagation conditions were disappointing, but a good
number of contacts were made, mainly on 20m and 40m bands. There were
model aircraft contestants from 33 countries and 115 contestants at the
competition, which was won by the German team.

serial number. The RSGB 432MHz activity evening takes place on 14
August between 2200 to 2230 local on all modes. The exchange takes the
form of RST, serial number, locator and postal district. The RSGB 70MHz
Trophy Contest takes place on 19 August between 0900 to 1500 on all
modes. The exchange takes the form of RST, serial number, locator and
postal district. Now the solar factual data for the period from 30 July
to 5 August, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS

The solar disc was spotless until a single spot rotated into view on
the 3rd. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels varied between
68 and 70 units and the average was 69 units. The 90 day solar flux
average had remained at 74 units for the last 8 weeks, however, this
week it declined by two units to 72. X-ray flux levels remained below
the minimum A1 level everyday. Geomagnetic activity started at
unsettled levels due to a coronal hole, the Ap on the 1st was 17 units.
Activity then declined to quiet levels. On the 4th and the 5th the Ap
was only 2 units. The average was Ap 7 units. The ACE spacecraft saw
solar wind speeds peak at 660 kilometres per second on the 1st but then
declined to 290 by the 5th. Particle densities remained below 10
Particles per cubic centimetre throughout the period. Bz varied between
minus 7 and plus 8 nanoTeslas on the 1st and between minus and plus 2
nanoTeslas on the quiet days. HF conditions have been unexciting, as
often happens at this time of year, though 14MHz at times sparked into
life, particularly on north-south paths. The band is still staying open
until late evening. Sporadic-E is tailing off, but occurred daily at
28MHz and, less often, on 70 and 50MHz. The new OZ 40MHz beacon was
heard several times. And finally the solar forecast. This week the
quiet side of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. The Sun could
become spotless during the week. Solar activity should be very low.
Solar flux levels are expected to be between the mid to high 60's.
Geomagnetic activity should start at quiet levels, however, around
midweek a recurring coronal hole is expected to increase activity. This
particular coronal hole as already lasted 6 solar rotations, with the

4 hole changing shape and size each rotation. Back at the end of April
the disturbance lasted 4 days with the most disturbed day having an Ap
of 26 units. On the last rotation, it only lasted 2 days with an Ap
index of 12 units on both days. Quieter conditions are expected to
return by the weekend. One solar rotation lasts approximately 28 days,
as seen from Earth. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes
should be around 17MHz for the south and 14MHz for the north. The
darkness hour lows should be about 9MHz. Paths this week to South
Africa should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent
success rate of about 22MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90
per cent success rate will be around 18MHz. The best time to try this
path will be between 0800 and 1700 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take
place on some days, particularly on 28MHz and to a lesser extent on
50MHz and above. And that's all for this week from the propagation
team.
