If she had received this as a normal sequential assignment, it's doubtful that anyone would say much. It's just very puzzling why anyone would request the call sign. I can offer a few ideas why she might request it. Years ago (the 60's), part of the women's movement involved the idea that breasts were nothing to be ashamed of - women had them and men had to accept that fact (as many men from that time may fondly remember, this eventually led to women burning their bras). Later, the women's movement urged women to accept their own bodies as uniquely theirs without placing some type of negative connotation on that. This had to do with the idea that a woman is no less important simply because her body is different than a man's. Still later, all this evolved into the idea that breasts were a sign of power equal the a man's penis (the phrase "breast power," an alternative to "women's power," came out of that). This had to do with the psychology thinking of the time which said many supposedly male things (guns, missiles, and so on) were actually phallic symbols. In the end, it may simply be that Kim likes how her callsign sounds. Dwight Stewart (W5NET) http://www.qsl.net/w5net/ |
