Thought it was developed for encryption.

Encryption would be one possible application for Markov's algorithms -
although that wasn't his original goal. He was developing formulae to
attempt to explain the random motion of particles in liquids (aka
Brownian motion), and various other stochastic processes. His
algorithm is most loved by spammers, who use it to create blocks of
text which pass right through spam filters. Apparently, some artists
have used it to write song lyrics and prose....
