If you been in a radio club, you've seen your share of characters. Ham radio has no shortage of all types of personalities. Ever see this guy before? He just joined our club. Comes to first meeting. It's pretty obvious he's is the hyperactive overbearing type, talks constantly & loudly, dominates the discussion. Can't wait to see what happens at the fourth meeting with this guy. We're betting he will run the entire meeting himself. At one club I belong to (not radio, but here we are talking about human interaction skills) a prospective member needs to visit and participate in various activities (mostly informal and not at all arduous tasks) for 8 separate club meetings (most meetings are informal gatherings in the club house Tuesdays and Fridays) (need not be consequitive). The purpose of this requirement is to get to know the new guy and to see if we get along and like each other. Someone obnoxious like the above radio club member is less likely to be invited to join after 8 visits. And he as a visiter would not be able to commandeer meetings and the club. This filtering process has worked well, and we haven't had any serious interpersonal problems (fist fights and such) happen. And we have a diverse group of people anyway. Once this guy decides that you're a club of "losers" and leaves, consider installing a new member filter like this. |
