If the scanner display shows "OK", it means data is sent correctly to
the radio. This means that your COM port setup is correct and that the
electrical connections to the radio are OK (data is transmitted and
received on the same pin, so you cannot miss one and not the other).

The error message means that the program does not receive the reply
from the radio. This means that either your interface cable has a
fault which prevents the data from the radio reaching the computer, or
you have some software problem that prevents the program from
detecting the incoming data from the serial port.

To test a little more, start Hyper Terminal. Configure it to *not*
"echo typed characters locally" (clear the check mark), 9600 bps,
XON/XOFF, no parity. Also, clear the check mark for "Send line ends
with line feeds".

Now connect your interface cable to the computer, but do *not* connect
your radio. In Hyper Terminal, hit "enter" a couple of times and then
type some characters. If you can see what you type, the interface
cable is OK, and you have a software problem. If you cannot see what
you type, you have a hardware problem.

I have read people claiming the software does not work with XP, but
for me, it works perfectly, both with Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Not familiar with the Alinco radio, but does it require a stereo, or a
mono, plug on the cable.

Radio Shack PRO92, 93, 95 scanners require mono, and will work with a
stereo/mono adapter on the end of a cable which has a stereo plug. Such
adapters are available at Radio Shack, and other such suppliers.

Incidently, the plug is on the cable, the jack is on the radio. Plugs
are male, jacks are female :-).
