VHF UHF scanner radios that can tune down into
the HF band I. E. 150 kHz -30 MHz where a long wire antenna is needed,
do not make very good SSB/AM FM receivers.
Your better off purchasing a portable AM FM short-wave(SSB capable)
receiver.
Make sure it has a antenna jack and add a after market antenna tuner
to tweak 50' of copper wire!

These portables don't make for good HF scanners. Although they may scan
there
individual pre sets , unless there is a power house SSA signal
the squelch won't open up. Most portables under $300 won't have squelch.

When doing SSB work on HF (unless you
go with a $500 to $1000 communication receiver) sitting on one (1)
frequency
and the SSB utility signals are weak, monitoring the traffic is be best
way to go.
It's a different aspect of our radio hobby , then listening to AM air
band or the VHF UHF FM band

..It really takes two (2) different radios, each built for the specific
mode and bands to be worked.
