Are you telling me that it's unusual for hams to operate (illegaly)
out-of-band?

(Trying to stop choking from uncontrollable fits of laughter.)

Consider the number of hams who use their dual-banders on the FRS and GMRS
channels...or the number of hams who use their HF rigs on the CB band.

I would dare say that *most* hams partake in such behavior at least
occasionally.

Not condoning it, just stating that it does happen...and happens frequently.

Likely some of the new no code types that can't give up there 11 meter ways.

Let me re-phrase, no REAL ham would do it.

Funny that - know of more than the odd "real" hams who use their amateur
gear on out of band frequencies - and yes they hold the VK equivalent of an
exra class licence, and I know of US amateurs (amongst many others) who have
come here to VK who have used their amateur gear on out of band
allocations - be it HF or VHF/UHF. I suggest that the licence class or
whether they have passed a CW test has absolutely no bearing on amateurs
behaviour or likelyhood to use amateur gear out of the allocated bands.

actually, better than pranking them (which lets them know you or someone else
is listening) is to just listen secretly so that you might be able to secretly
find out if one of the employess spit in your drink or not. (or did something
else to your food).

While the following item is not scanner related, it does have to do with this
thread and was reported in the newspapers and on tv here some time ago. I think
last year (2003).

A MCDonald's employee was spitting into customers' soft drinks (without the
customers' knowing) when and because the customers' ordered the soft drinks
with "no ice".

among doing other similar nasty stuff to the customers' drinks and food.

somehow, some customers found out and complained (several different customers.
A BUNCH of customers complained.

I think she was arrested (although I don't remember if she was arrested or not.
She was definitely fired though.

so now, I prefer to secretly listen rather than telling anyone anything.

on't know all the pertinent details of this issue. But it's also
possible that the "drive thru" system which was "hacked" ( I hate
using computer terms to describe radio actions) was on the older 154
Mhz frequency band. One of those drive thru frequencies, in common

that's pretty much what I was going to say also.
that I don't know the frequency he broadcast on, but it might be one of the
MURS frequencies.

And there are some businesses operating on MURS frequencies.

And it's perfectly legal for anyone to broadcast on MURS frequencies
liscence-free within the legal power limits.

I know that some of the fast food drive throughs in my area operate in the VHF
Hi band somewhere in the 150 through 159 MHZ.

It might or might not be on the MURS frequencies.

but they did seem to be in the specific MHZ range thattyou mentioned, if I
remember correctly.

re not random interference which would require the business to
tolerate them, they are intentional attacks upon the customers of the
business intended to do harm! Local Law enforcement can charge them with
"Malicious mischief"

ah, but what if this is the scenario???

If the Burger King is operating on a Murs frequency, and if the prankster just
happens to live in a house close to that particular Burger King where reception
of the drive through is possible within his house, and he's legally
transmitting on a MURS frequecy from his home?

This reminds me of the time that I was accused of malicious interference (which
I was not doing) for legally transmitting on CB channel 14.

During the time that a fairgrounds here held it's annual fair, I happened to be
driving by it while talking on the CB in my car on CB channel 14 (back then,
commonly used by kids' walkies talkies also and maany other part 15 devices)
and someone operating the fair told me that I was illegaly transmitting on a
frequency that was reserved only for the business operations of the fairground.

They did admit that it was CB channel 14, but told me (through the radio) that
CB channel 14 was reserved only for the business operations of that fair in
that area, and that I was illegally interfering with it by talking on CB
channel 14.

I should add that this was in the days after the FCC had already ruled that
liscence-free CB operation was perfectly legal.

And my CB was at or under the legal power limits. (no modifications).

The fair just happened to be using the very common frequency of CB channel 14
since back then, those CB channel 14 devices were very cheap and very common
since they were then commonly used by part 15 devices.

he Radio use was not the point, and the discussion depicting the crime as a
prank was ill-conceived. The company was damaged and the customers
disturbed. Do you defend such anti social acts?

oh. so you think I'm anti-social because I innocently talked on CB channel 14
in the 80's (operating without a liscence on those frequencies was permitted
back then also) and just happened to interfere with the business operations of
the annual fair at the fairgrounds that happened to use the same CB channel for
their business operations and they accused me of innterfering with their
business operations for transmitting on their business channel of CB channel
14 (even though there wasn't anyone talking on the channel when I transmitted.
It was after they heard me say something that they knew I was on their
"business channel of CB channel 14" and accused me of malicious interference
with their business operations of the fair."

By the way, back then, one of the school systems' around here had ALL of their
school bus drivers business operations assigned to one of the CB channels.

I didn't get accused of interfering with that one, as far as I remember, but
that school system olater eventualy moved to other frequencies that were and
are indeed frequencies reserved for either only business or government ot
something like that.

what about this scenario??? I'm sure this has happened before (although it
wasn't me. honestly, it wasn't me).

What about all the fast food pranksters not using a radio?

I'm talking about the people who drive up to the drive through menu board in
their car, then order a bunch of food, and then instead of driving the rest of
the way through the drive through, they simply pull out and drive away, so that
the car behind them gets charged for all of the food that they ordered that the
car behind them did not order.

ah, someone else who remembers when people tried running businesses on CB
radios!!!

I was afraid that none of the other posters here were going to believe my CB
stories, which I know for a fact did indeed happen.

And I just ran across your post now.

As I said, a school syatem around here tried to run their bus drivers' business
communications on CB radio.

And I was accused of illegally transmitting on the county fair's business
frequency of CB channel 14.
