I would use the tape-out.

Anyone try scanning a few (e.g., 6) acars freq's., and rely on the Squelch
being fast enough to grab the full message if one does appear on on of
these scanned channels ?

I have tried that in the past, but that would require all signals having the
same strength. I recomend using only the primary freq(s) since the scanner
mostly stops at those.
