FR-200. Not "real" small but has the advantage of not needing batteries.
Crank away... P.S. I wasn't referring to speed when I said crank away.... wrote in message ... I'm riding my bicycle on a long distance bike tour next summer. Will be camping out along way What small rugged model SW would you guys advise for such a trip? |

Both are superb! wrote in message ... I'm riding my bicycle on a long distance bike tour next summer. Will be camping out along way What small rugged model SW would you guys advise for such a trip? |
Small rugged SW for long distance bike tour - Sony SW-100 or SW07
The smallest and best portable shortwave radios ever made:
The Sony ICF SW-100 is very good but needs the AN-LP1 antenna to perform well. Waters & Stanton ships to the US. My orders have been received in as little as 1 week. http://www.wsplc.com/acatalog/Sony_P...Receivers.html (no active antenna) http://www.ogormans.co.uk/shortwav1.htm#SONY ICF-SW100 (no active antenna) http://www.unitedbuy.com/icfsw100s.html (includes active antenna AN-LP1) The SW-07 is sweet and includes the automatic AN-LP2 active antenna. http://parkaveelectronics.com/produc...mid=SONICFSW07 http://www.pmelectronix.com/sony-per...dio-p-708.html http://www.unitedbuy.com/icfsw07.html Except for Waters & Stanton I would call these places to confirm item is in stock. Having both of those (sw-07 sw-100) I wouldn't consider either one "rugged"
by any means. It wouldn't take much of a drop to rip the folding lid and wires right off of them... "Barker" wrote in message ... Go to a Walgreen's store in your area and see what they have in the way
of a small AM/FM/Shortwave radio.I am guessing you want something inexpensive and if it gets dropped or wet,you won't be out much money.Happy Biycling. cuhulin |

If your seriously considering the SW-100E (E=European version), also
consider the Sony AN-LP1 antenna. This antenna was included with the now discontinued SW-100S (S=System -N.A. version). Without the AN-LP1/2 antenna, reception off the whip of either radio will be compromised but still very usable. The SW-07 (includes AN-LP2 antenna) and the SW-100 are both digital tuning and both have a synch detector. I personally like the ergonomics of the SW-100 but the SW07 automatically tunes the AN-LP2 (included). The AN-LP1 has a dial for band switching. The SW-100's case is more rugged than the SW-07. But with either radio, or any radio for that matter, I would treat them with care. Performance of these two radios with the AN-LP1/2 antenna are virtually identical. The performance edge is given to the SW-100 when comparing both radios off the whip. The SW-07 has more memory and also has a station memory ROM chip that can be updated annually. The SW-100 has 100 memories. Yahoo groups has a group for each of these radios with lots of good info. wrote in message ... www.walgreens.com (Electronics,Radios) If you are going to be
tuning a radio while riding a bicycle, unless you rig a good neckstrap to the radio, chances are you will drop the radio on the road and it's a goner.I don't know about the Walgreen's stores in your area, but the Walgreen's stores in my area almost always has some electronic thingys on sale and if they have any AM/FM/Shortwave radios on sale, you can buy one for about one third to about one half price off of the regular store price. cuhulin |

i use a rat shack dx399(sangean 606) in a dumptruck. its very durable!
it even fell out and got run over in the mud once! it looks a little rough but still works perfectly. i also use a grundig mini 300 while working construction. it hangs off the back of my baseball cap in its little protective cover with the antenna sticking up above my head. that would work perfectly while riding a bike. battery usage is great! i get almost 2 weeks on two aa cells. (watch out that you dont poke any eyes out with the antenna sticking up!) |

G The AN-LP1/2 fold up into the provided flat pouch about 8" square. Very easy to pack and well worth the money. The SW100 was my choice for backpacking and camping many years ago. I was impressed enough to buy another when it got broken. The smallest and best portable shortwave radios ever made: Agreed. The Sony ICF SW-100 is very good but needs the AN-LP1 antenna to perform well. Many folk have suggested that Sony's little wire extension aerial, about 15 feet of wire in a little plastic reel that clips onto the aerial, gives as good results as AN-LP1 if erected vertically (e.g. up into a tree), and sometimes better. For home listening I've strung out a 25 foot nearly vertical wire, which gives a good improvement over Sony's 15' reel. If reception was a problem backpacking (which I've never found in the UK -- the fully extended whip is nearly always good enough, and the reel for difficult cases), I'd simply consider taking some extra wire along. Very thin stuff is fine. With some string and a stone you can throw the string over a branch and pull up a vertical wire. http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/gadgets/SW100.html -- Chris Malcolm DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King's Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/] |

That's true if operating the SW100 open. But if moving about you can operate it closed, and it comes with a little pseudo-leather semi-pouch which closes over the lid snap, which both cushions falls and stops the lid opening in a fall. The volume control and an earphone jack are accessible with the pouch thing closed. The performance of the SW100 and 7600GR are pretty much the same, except that the SW100 is much smaller and has a squeakier speaker. The SW100 os basically a miniaturised 7600. But on headphones they sound the same (both extremely good). A ngelcted point of these radios is that they not only have a phone socket, they have a line out socket, and can deliver superb audio quality of FM to both earphones and an external hifi. -- Chris Malcolm DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King's Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/] |

Jim wrote: i use a rat shack dx399(sangean 606).... I'll cast another vote for the DX-399. Mine came with a universal power supply. The wall wart can run on 110 or 240 volts AC, and there is an adapter that lets you use US- or European-style outlets. The big disadvantage is that they were discontinued years ago. I don't know if you can still buy the wall wart separately. If you can, it will work with the Sangean 606. You won't be in a tent every night. I guess that every radio recommended will receive not just SW, but MW and FM as well, and maybe LW too. You will want to hear the local news and weather. |

Note h'ever that the SW100, while small in itself, is a digitally tuned radio, and thus eats batteries at least twice as fast as an old fashioned analogue radio. If you factor in battery weight if a long time away from chargers or shops, you might want to trade digital tuning performance for analogue battery economy. Or you could devise a battery charger running off a bicycle hub dynamo :-) -- Chris Malcolm DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King's Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/] |
