I got a highly used and scratched 2010 for about $250 on eBay.
Constantly surprises me with nothing but the built-in whip. But, I've
never heard an Eton, so I can't compare.

Your best bet, buy them both, and then auction off the one you like
least :-)

piece-of-****, after my miserable experience with that cheap crap
Grundig S350 ! Now, I am perfectly happy with my Sony ICF-S10MK2 $10

If I had 500, I'd find an R-75, or I'd get the E1. (I have the E-1. Abysmal
whip sensitivity, fine on an outdoor, FYI)

Had the 2010 in the 80's-wish I hadn't sold it now, but I wouldn't get one
now, not at the insane ripoff prices for what still is a 20 year old
receiver. Collectors have ruined it for us poor folk.

Care to elaborate? What do you believe makes it "overrated"? I would say
that a considerable number of knowledgeable radio people consider it to be
the best portable ever made. I have owned many portables and have never
found one better than the 2010.

Well, I wouldn't pay anything close to $500.00 for a 20 year old
portable, mint cosmetics notwithstanding. I owned one for 8 years. It
was a very nice radio when introduced, but I think the E1 has it beat
on features alone.

Before you embarass yourself any more you had better throw your S10 in
the trash pronto. The electronics come from either mainland China or
their little coastal island. Indeed I would not be surprised if it was
assembled there too.

Think of it like this, from the world of tabletop radios: Would you rather
spend about the same amount of money on a Sony ICF-6800WA (Orange), or a
Kenwood R-5000, assuming they are both in mint condition? They sell for
about the same amount, with the Sony perhaps going for a bit more.

The Sony will be of more interest to a collector due to its rarity and
uniqueness (although it's a hell of a fine radio also), whereas the Kenwood
is going to be purchased by someone that wants more modern features and
performance. Or, you could compare either to a Satellit 800, which offers
comparable performance for a few hundred dollars less.

The ICF-2010 is one nice radio, but is now more of interest to those that
want to own a classic radio and are willing to pay a premium. Same with the
Satellit 700, or many other classics.

Unlike the E1 which is made in Bangalore India.

I should have mentioned the Eton would be my choice. It has the same
synchronous detector as the Drake R8B, plus passband shift and 3
bandwidths.
