Mint Sony 2010 or New Eton E1?

If you had $500, would you get a mint, late serial number Sony 2010 or a new
Eton E1?

You should be able to get an E1 for quite a bit less than $500, whereas
the sky is the limit for a mint 2010. If you just want a high end
portable and you're not a collector of 2010's, go find a good deal on
the E1. However, if you have as much as $500 burning a hole in your
pocket, you might save a little bit more and buy a tabletop.

Sony 2010 is overrated and has more appeal now as a collectible. And you
pay a premium price for that.

The Sony 2010 is NOT overated! I've picked up weak SSB signals from all over
the world (Australia, USSR) from my location in Ohio. All this with a piece
of wire clipped to the whip antenna. Every bit as good as the desktops...

Been on many DXpeditions where some folks brought along 2010's...

Sorry... not as good as the desktops. A dandy portable for its time though.

So you've never owned one or spent a lot of time using one yet your passing
judgement on it by implying it's passe?

Hmmm...

Sorry, I should have said "overrated for the price". It's a fine-performing
portable, but these days you pay more than it's worth for one in mint
condition, when judged on the merits of performance alone. To a collector,
the value is whatever the market will bear, but for actual use the
price/performance is not so good. We've all seen these going for $500 and
sometimes a lot higher lately. No way it's worth that if you're looking for
the best performance for the money.

Yes, I actually own one. No, I wouldn't spend $500 on a Sony 2010, even if
it was in mint condition. Other than notch filters, pass band tuning, and
finer that 100Khz resolution, it's weak signal sensitivity even on SSB is
equal to that of desktop receivers. Have I ever owned a desktop? I think an
Icom R71A, Kenwood R5000, and Drake R8 would qualify...
