Default Handheld GMRS radio range question

I own a pair of "14 Mile" GMRS radios. I can get, on a GOOD day, about
half a mile with them.

I just ordered the new ones from Cobra that say "25 miles". They run 5
watts, most I've seen in a handheld GMRS so far. Will give a report when
they arrive in a couple weeks (back ordered).

I have some five-watters that I use very occasionally for specific
purposes. Over reasonably open land, I might get two miles, usually
closer to 1.25. Unless that Cobra has some super-duper high-gain
antenna with penetration through dirt and dense foliage, I doubt if
you'll get much more than 10% of the stated range under normal
conditions.

My first test will be on a HUGE frozen lake. We fish about 3 miles from
shore.
