Default why does my reception go to hell AT NIGHT ???

i went out to the edge of our yard and reception was fine-- the
bzzzzzzhmmmmmmmmm decreased as distance from the house increased.

can this be fixed with an external antenna mounted sufficiently away
from the house, but with an ultra-shielded lead-in cable to the house?
