DEMOCRACY NOW is the best on the list. Host Amy Goodman is one of the best journalist in America. "Amy Goodman is an extraordinary journalist, in the grand American tradition of Lincoln Steffens, Heywood Broun, I.F. Stone," said Howard Zinn, a Marxist historian and frequent guest on Democracy Now! "Her contribution to our culture is unique, bringing information and ideas to her listeners which they cannot see in the major media." Zinn is correct. And Democracy Now! proudly posts his quote at its web site. I.F. Stone was a longtime radical who devoted the last years of his life to undermining America's war against Communism in Southeast Asia. Heywood Broun ran for congress as a socialist but was later expelled from the Socialist Party because of his closeness to Communist Party members and his membership in Communist front groups. "A one-time admirer of Mussolini and his Fascist regime, [Lincoln] Steffens did as much as any American to swing the idealistic youth of the thirties toward what Max Eastman called the 'pro-Soviet parade,'" wrote Kenneth Lloyd Billingsley in his 1998 history Hollywood Party: How Communism Seduced the American Film Industry in the 1930s and 1940s. "Steffens told Marxist scholar Sidney Hook that his own motive for supporting Communism was emotional, that he had given up trying to think things out and simply 'felt' that the Communists were right." As a journalist, Steffens whitewashed atrocities committed by the Soviet Union. Amy Goodman fits almost perfectly into the tradition of these Marxist-socialist propagandists. The difference is that Goodman has had the skill, entrepreneurial or exploitative, to make herself a millionairess. To decipher and deconstruct the cult of Democracy Now!, note that key figures around Goodman such as radio producer Mike Burke and television producers Ana Nogueira, Elizabeth Press and John Hamilton all have backgrounds in Indymedia, a leftwing Internet movement steeped in the views of radical political cult figure Noam Chomsky. Nogueira also has written for the Chomskyite Z Magazine. Chomsky, a linguist at the Masschusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), teaches that the United States is the successor to Nazi Germany, that the Holocaust might never have happened, that Communists are better than capitalists, and that Western democracy is fraudulent because corporations "manufacture consent" through media manipulation. In June 2002 Democracy Now! became a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization independent of Pacifica Radio. It continues to air on Pacifica-owned and affiliated stations. It is satellite-uplinked via the Pacifica Satellite System, but also via the taxpayer-subsidized Public Radio Satellite System (PRSS). "Democracy Now! is funded entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers, and foundations," says its web site. "We do not accept advertisers, donations from corporations, or donations from governments. This allows us to maintain our independence." But serious questions have arisen about how Democracy Now! developed with the resources of Pacifica Radio and grants from the Carnegie Corporation, the Ford Foundation, J.M. Kaplan Fund and others - suddenly in 2002 became independent and the effective property of Amy Goodman without any recompense to Pacifica. This transfer included valuable assets such as trademarks, ownership of years of archived programs and interviews, affiliate station access and more. And through a contract that remains secret, Amy Goodman is also receiving $1 million per year for a five year period that began in 2002, according to Pacifica Treasurer Jabari Zakiya, to continue doing what has become Pacifica's flagship morning news program. Goodman also is able to use a tax-exempt radio program and taxpayer-subsidized public radio satellite transponder to promote what may be her for-profit book and other lucrative activities. http://www.discoverthenetwork.com/in...asp?indid=1692 Democracy Now! receives indirect funding from George Soros, http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/in....asp?indid=977 and direct funding from Soros' Open Society Institute, http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/fu...asp?fndid=5181 the Glaser Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Tides Foundation, http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/fu...asp?fndid=5184 the Public Welfare Foundation, http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/fu...98&category=79 the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/fu...83&category=79 and other left-leaning foundations. |
