It ain't QRM/N if nobody hears it.

Damn, that's some fantasy world you live in.

Nah, just reality. Creating interference to stations that get no
listening
in the interference zone is a small price to keep terrestrial radio
competitive.

Excuse me, I hear it and it interferes with my reception.

If AM dies, as it is doing very fast, there will be nothing to worry about.
The choice is to sacrifice minimally listened to fringe signals to preserve
the service in the primary coverage areas.

Nope, it is a fraction of the power. A 50 kw AM uses a 500 watt HD signal
on
the same frequency

This is pure baloney. Same crapola the DRM crowd tried to pass off on
the general public.

Check the technical specs. We are installing a new Nautel RX 50, which does
50 kw analog and 500 watts digital on AM.

In Band On Channel has 1/100th of the analog signal in the digital mode.

In any case, HD sounds far better than any analog signal. HD radio
stations
will abandon analog and redirect the full station power of their
amplifiers
towards the HD digital stream.

Indeed. I just checked at www.hdradio.com. I had no idea there were
so
many HD FM stations in my city (6). All have a 2nd channel also, so this
makes 6 new stations in my city!

I'll certainly be getting a HD radio this year, and I don't understand
all
the opposition to it in this group. Is it just a case of old
farts/curmudgeons opposing something new? I *really* don't understand
the
idea of clinging to what is essentially 100 year old technology - analog
radio. Are some of you lamenting the death of incandescent light bulbs
also?

HD radio will happen much like HD TV did. Prices will drop until
Critical
Mass is reached, then it will take over. Once you see HD TV, you
realize
how bad the old system was.

It trashes my reception. Is that so hard to understand?

Does it trash any station in your market area in its primary coverage area?
Even the FCC understands that we are going to sacrifice fringe,
non-protected non-primary reception for the opportunity to preserve free
terrestrial radio.

They'd better get some HD listeners before they do that, elsewise their
listeners will abandon them.

A low power, 9mm HD single chip decoder that uses 10% of the power of the
current chipsets headlines Radio World this week. Using this chip,
portables
are now possible with long battery life and the price point comes way
down
due to component materials. This is the evolutionary development we were
waiting for that will make receivers better and cheaper.

HD Radios will never sell.

Ah, Wal-Mart put the first HD radio on sale this week. The momentum is
building, and will continue over the next several years.

The only momentum I see building is the number of posts you make on the
subject.

It's because he's a shill!

Sacrificing CHOICE and creating QRM. Such a deal!

Edweenie is one of those unfortunates who has forgotten that for the majority of
us here (most likely), radio is a hobby. Edweenie is NOT a hobbyist, maybe never
was, but he IS a bean counter with a product to sell and promote.

That's the ONLY reason he is here. To defend and to shill for HD/IBOC.

Snake oil!

So upgrade to a digital receiver. That's what I'm gonna do.

Besides, HD AM may never take off, for many reasons. Some are obvious and
some are more subtle. But HD FM is a great idea.

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" - Spock, "Wrath of
Kahn"

The couple thousand people in the US who actually listen to AM DX don't
really count, as far as the radio stations themselves are concerned.
Personally, I'd rather have clear local reception 24/7 than be able to catch
WLW from Cincinnati every now and then. Besides, I can listen WLW any time
I want on the net.

Yes, this sucks in a way. I have dozens of analog radios, from 1935 tube
antiques (including an E. H. Scott Allwave 23 in a Tasman cabinet that I
have had since about 1970) up through 1970s Grundig Satellit 2100, Panasonic
RF-2200, a Drake R8, and a Grundig S-800, and loads of small portables and
antique 50s/60s transistor sets. Potentially, all of these could be made
useless on AM.

However, I really don't think HD AM will take over. Hell, we are getting a
brand new, 50,000 watt sports/talk AM station here in 3 weeks! 1010 on the
dial for you AM DXers! But if the choice is no free local radio because
everything has moved to subscription satellite radio (because it's digital),
then I vote for local, free, digital, HD radio. And I will vote with my
dollars.

Mike
