Sacrificing CHOICE and creating QRM. Such a deal!

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" - Spock, "Wrath of

"Damn, quoting some fictional character from a fictional movie lends real

Yes, it does, considering the truth of the quote.

Then by all means continue living in your fictional, comic book like fantasy
world like Edweenie does.

While your attempt to shift the issue is typical, it is also transparent.
The quote above serves to illustrate what is happening with HD radio. If
enough people are willing to support it and vote with their dollars (I am)
then it will succeed, regardless of what you and other "analog or die!"
types say or do. Money always talks. Radio stations aren't going to
cater to people who are outside of their primary market. If the primary
market demands HD radio, then it will happen. If a few thousand DXers
suffer, too bad. Millions of others will benefit.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It doesn't matter
*who* said it, because it's true.

But it's not a need at all... as AM radio serves everyone quite well at the
present time without HD/IBOC.

I'd characterize it more as a 'want' on the part of the few, rather than a
'need' of the many.

Yes, it serves it's aging and declining audience quite well. If it wants
to survive another 70 years, then it *may* have to change.

IAC, I'm not talking about AM HD. AM HD seems like a waste of time, like
"AM stereo" was 20 years ago. I'm talking about FM HD. FM was originally
designed for high fidelity. Then we got stereo, a big improvement. Now
it's time to go digital, another big improvement, with the added side
benefit of more channels in the same bandwidth.

I'd characterize it more as a 'want' on the part of the few, rather than a
'need' of the many.

Don't discount "wants". The "wants' of the many also outweigh the "wants"
of the few. If more people want HD AM than want analog AM then guess who
wins? If not, then things will stay the same. That's the thing about
"majority rules".

Edweenie is one of those unfortunates who has forgotten that for the
majority of
us here (most likely), radio is a hobby. Edweenie is NOT a hobbyist, maybe
never
was, but he IS a bean counter with a product to sell and promote.

A. Explain the TenTec, Drake and ICOM receivers I have.
B. Explain being a founder and original board member of IRCA.
C. Explain nearly 45 years of NRC membership.
D. Explain why I published the only accurate Latin American log in 1963.
E. Explain why I have visited dozens of stations to get veries for MW DXers.
F. Explain the 2200 veries I had in my collection.

That's the ONLY reason he is here. To defend and to shill for HD/IBOC.

It's a valid DX subject. Interestingly, we are now seeing reports of HD
signal DX, some over 1000 miles on MW.

No, it does not. Most AM listening is in over-55 year olds, and in the
under-45 group, less than 10% are using AM... even less as you move younger.
In a few more years, AM will essentially be an arcane service for retirees,
unless something is done to reverse the trend... and that something is HD:

I'd characterize it more as a 'want' on the part of the few, rather than a
'need' of the many.

AM is irrelevant to most Americans. More than 60% NEVER use it.
