It ain't QRM/N if nobody hears it.

Damn, that's some fantasy world you live in.

Nah, just reality. Creating interference to stations that get no
listening
in the interference zone is a small price to keep terrestrial radio
competitive.

Excuse me, I hear it and it interferes with my reception.

If AM dies, as it is doing very fast, there will be nothing to worry about.
The choice is to sacrifice minimally listened to fringe signals to preserve
the service in the primary coverage areas.

Sacrificing CHOICE and creating QRM. Such a deal!

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" - Spock, "Wrath of
Kahn"

The couple thousand people in the US who actually listen to AM DX don't
really count, as far as the radio stations themselves are concerned.
Personally, I'd rather have clear local reception 24/7 than be able to catch
WLW from Cincinnati every now and then. Besides, I can listen WLW any time
I want on the net.

Yes, this sucks in a way. I have dozens of analog radios, from 1935 tube
antiques (including an E. H. Scott Allwave 23 in a Tasman cabinet that I
have had since about 1970) up through 1970s Grundig Satellit 2100, Panasonic
RF-2200, a Drake R8, and a Grundig S-800, and loads of small portables and
antique 50s/60s transistor sets. Potentially, all of these could be made
useless on AM.

However, I really don't think HD AM will take over. Hell, we are getting a
brand new, 50,000 watt sports/talk AM station here in 3 weeks! 1010 on the
dial for you AM DXers! But if the choice is no free local radio because
everything has moved to subscription satellite radio (because it's digital),
then I vote for local, free, digital, HD radio. And I will vote with my
dollars.

Yes, it does, considering the truth of the quote.

Then by all means continue living in your fictional, comic book like fantasy
world like Edweenie does.

While your attempt to shift the issue is typical, it is also transparent.
The quote above serves to illustrate what is happening with HD radio. If
enough people are willing to support it and vote with their dollars (I am)
then it will succeed, regardless of what you and other "analog or die!"
types say or do. Money always talks. Radio stations aren't going to
cater to people who are outside of their primary market. If the primary
market demands HD radio, then it will happen. If a few thousand DXers
suffer, too bad. Millions of others will benefit.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It doesn't matter
*who* said it, because it's true.
