If FCC mandates digital that will not be the case. Terrestrial broadcasting will be digital. And alternatives will be satellite, or internet. Internet radio is already being smashed into oblivion by the latest rulings on royalties for digital content. I suspect that most, if not all, of Live365's stations (which constitute, to the best of my knowledge, the only completely legal indy internet stations) will go offline soon, unless that decision is rethought and changed, as most do not have the money to cover the retroactive (to January, 2006) doubling of royalty fees. www.savenetradio.org I know there are already petitions to repeal, vacate, or modify the decision. As well as several lawsuits filed. Don't count it out in the long run. And with Wi-fi and mobile carriers offering internet radio as a sales pitch for their services, there's going to be some deep pockets involved in moving the courts to revisit the decision. It's going to be trouble in the short term, for internet radio, but long term, it's viability is assured. |
