In the iPhone's case, the potential market is fairly large, but not the entire cellphone market, like our resident troll "none" believes, simply because the entire cellphone market is not interested in smartphones, regardless of how "smart" the phone is. Many people simply won't trade a physical 12-key phone dialpad for access to Youtube or Google, period. I'm not in that category obviously, nor are you, but the VAST majority of people simply are.
