It is only in the USA where there are an over abundance of both AM/MW and FM Radio Stations that IBOC is a significant Technical Problem and then the main problem is AM/MW Nightime Interference due to Medium Wave propagation. - All of Latin America has higher power, closer packed AM and FM - than the US, and, on FM, places as varied as Indonesia and some - of the African nations like Ghana, have huge numbers of independent - FMs. d'Eduardo, Most 'countries' around the World have Government Controlled {Limited} Media : Which Translates to Fewer Radio Stations per 10-K Square Miles then the USA. That is not true. In this Hemisphere, there is no nation save Cuba where the government controls media. In most nations, for every government station, there are 100 non-government ones. Ecuador has nearly 200 AMs still on the air, and over 600 FMs, and only two or three are government owned... every other nation is pretty much like that. Yes these Government Controlled Radio Stations are Higher Powered then in the USA. Not always. Plus the AM/MW 9 kHz Band Plan does make things more compact then the USA's 10 kHz Band Plan. Not by much. And that plan does not apply in The Americas. I 'predict' that China (PRC) will be going to IBOC Broadcasting on both AM/MW and FM Radio. Much lower Cost for Media Expansion to 'serve' the Masses -vice- building all new Radio Station's Transmitters and Towers. Followed by India etc . . . China will soon have more private stations than government ones, India already does. IMHO - The 'future' of USA Terrestrial Based "Free" Over-the-Air Radio Broadcasting is in an Expanded FM Radio Band. This can be done by 'converting' the old Analog TV Channel 5 & 6 Frequency Range 76~88 Mhz to the IBOC Digital Broadcasting and transfering the majority of 'local' AM/MW Radio Stations to the FM Band. Too many radios that do not cover it... |
