I'm not 100% sure that is the same as Pyramid. When I first discovered this beacon, I discovered I wasn't the first to discover it. ;-) If you google the pyd beacon, the first DF estimate was around N37 17 04.68 w115 56 14.83, not that far from where it shows up on google earth. When I DFed it, I got it further into the range, maybe N37.229183 W116.052884. This made even less sense. One one trip where I was going to make DFing part of the "experience", I popped a fuse in the amp of my direction finding gear. It was something I couldn't replace anywhere except Vegas. Now I carry a spare fuse. [I think the 12V car battery supply is too stiff and need to add a series resistor. ] The next time I was in the area, the powers that be turned off all the beacons except basecamp AEC. There is no AWOS at AEC, so I guess they are getting that info by phone just prior to the trip (if that is allowable) or getting it via voice from the basecamp personnel. |
