Isn't that an odd place to put it for navigation?

It must be just used as a reporting point.

I am reasonably sure that is the location of PYD NDB. I'm not 100%
sure that is the same as Pyramid.

When I first discovered this beacon, I discovered I wasn't the first
to discover it. ;-) If you google the pyd beacon, the first DF
estimate was around
N37 17 04.68 w115 56 14.83, not that far from where it shows up on
google earth. When I DFed it, I got it further into the range, maybe
N37.229183 W116.052884. This made even less sense.

One one trip where I was going to make DFing part of the "experience",
I popped a fuse in the amp of my direction finding gear. It was
something I couldn't replace anywhere except Vegas. Now I carry a
spare fuse. [I think the 12V car battery supply is too stiff and need
to add a series resistor. ] The next time I was in the area, the
powers that be turned off all the beacons except basecamp AEC. There
is no AWOS at AEC, so I guess they are getting that info by phone just
prior to the trip (if that is allowable) or getting it via voice from
the basecamp personnel.

I think it's to do with ABBIE

http://dlr.thexhunters.com/info/janet_routes_1.jpg

Not sure how - but I think aircraft fly north towards ABBIE then
somehow establish their position from some another source. Is there
another NDB somewhere that could be selected to triangulate? The
Basecamp NDB could be too far away

I guess you use a loop for DFing NDB's?

I have two ways to locate ndbs. One is a Bendix 555 marine rdf.
However, I found a relatively small copper pipe loop (square, 1 ft on
a side) with a wellbrook ala100 works much better. I have it set up so
that I can place a compass on it. When I did the original DF, I had an
impromptu loop made out of wire mounted on a paper plate. Yeah, very
improvised.

You realize there is nothing on that route diagram that can be
verified except for the bty based waypoint.

A fair point...

Still if your original posting is an NDB, then the route may make some
sense.

Following up on original post (thanks again for interesting stuff!), I
noticed some other sites to the east of PYD, nearer to Groom Lake:

Several tall masts and unidentified things at 37.2427 N, 115.8919 W.

A radar at 37.2288 N, 115.8823 W.

Unidentified things at 37.2422 N, 115.8659 W.

Anybody know what they are?

n37.2427 w115.8919 is interesting. However, the ndbs thus far are of
the wire between the pole style.

Now
n37.2422 w115.8659 is probably a radar threat. It is very typical
that these are mounted on small manmade hills. I'm not totally sure
why they do this, but my guess is this is due to the threats being
stripped off of the full blown weapons system. That is, the radar
would be higher if the complete weapon system were present. The other
guess is they put the dishes higher to keep ground personnel out of
the emitter path.

Is intriguing me a bit.

37°14'29.80"N 115°53'19.52"W

Two masts 300 yards apart with a line between them.

I'm thinking - and first thought - a phased HF (steerable) antenna.
