Default HD wreaks havoc in Detroit!

"HD signal wreaks havoc with analog radio"

"If you're having trouble lately pulling in a good signal from your
favorite radio station, it's not just that your radio dates from
Marconi's heyday. Radio signal interference has become a big problem
in Metro Detroit since the advent of HD (high definition)
broadcasting."

SWEET - this will get the attention of the automakers!

The other Half-of-the-Story and The-Bottom-Line is : Detroit
Public Radio WDET-FM (101.9) 's Chief Engineer Malloy Farley
explains : "So yes, reception problems can be solved by using
'HD' Digital Radios. And the upside with that is you can get
WDET-2 and other choices with an "HD" Digital Radio."

TBL = Better Sounding FM "HD" Radio and More Radio Choices.

Mr RHF:
I'll have to take exception to "Better Sounding" radio. I stopped
listening to my Sangean unit several weeks ago as I found myself
grinding my teeth after the 2nd half hour of listening to the FM HD and
especially the AM HD.
It is flat and bland sounding. I used to listen to my favorite station
in AM stereo, but when the switched to HD I purchased the Sangean. What
a waste of money. I guess the person that robbed my house must have
known this two weeks before Christmas as they ripped off my old Kenwood
reciever that was buried in mass of cables were it was hooked into my
computer, but left the Sangean unit which was just setting on my shelf
right next to the computer.
The Sangean has good sensitivity but left out the ability to shut off
the HD portion of the signal, so now I am using my Palstar R30CC to
listen to AM and the Radio Shark to FM.
I thought that HD would be just as good as DRM. Especially Radio New
Zealand's DRM service, but at least the local stations here truncates
the Highs in favor of the Bass. It is definitly inferior to the
Internet's offerings even though I have only dial-up service as of now.
The main complaint I had with DRM is the Drop-outs, but they are less
than my Dial-up service internet audio offerings.
I have been reading the British DAB newsgroup experiences. They have the
same complaints with Digital radio. Definitly below what was promised.
If my favorite station changes format to talk radio, I am go switch to
Satillite radio as I don't have enough money to purchase the amount of
CD's to keep me from being bored to death while driving.
I don't care what Mr Eduardo states about a listenable signal as the
only requirement for great ratings. It is content that causes me to
listen. That is why I like Short-wave, plenty of different formats, but
unfortunitly, it is hard to pick up in my Jeep.
Maybe, if Wifi becomes city wide, I might switch to that, but since the
Tucson city concil can't even agree if the should try to cover the
downtown, I not going to hold my breath.
If the decide to shut down the analog signal with no improvement on
sound of the content, then satillite will definently have another
customer, or my car will no have a radio.
Ken I.
