The 'difference' is that in the 1960s and 1970s the Radio Business was still alive and growing for FM Stereo to be adopted as part of that growth. Now in the 2000s and 2010s the Radio Business is slowly dying and and their is little chance for HD-Radio to catch-on. * THEN RADIO WAS THE MAJOR [ONLY] AUDIO ENTERTAINMENT OPTION [CHOICE] PLUS TV. Any future that HD-Radio has is with FM HD-Radio and expanding the FM Radio Business model to include FM HD-Radio HD-2 Channels with a second Audio Stream and a Second Income Stream for the Owners of the FM "HD" Radio Stations. * TODAY RADIO IS ONE OF MANY AUDIO AND MANY MULTI-MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS [CHOICES] FWIW - AM/MW Radio is simply not a "Player" in the Future of the Radio Business and the future of HD-Radio.
