It looks like the sun spots have formed a small prominence in the photosphere at those points. The magnetic lines are not twisted much so the loops are extending outward into the photosphere instead of causing a slightly cooler spot with twisted lines nearer the surface. You get flares when highly twisted magnetic lines break and reconnect into a less twisted forms. That process causes the matter on the sun's surface to get scattered and blown off into space. -- Telamon Ventura, California |
