Default Software Defined Receivers (SDR) Questions

Hi,

Just curious:

How popular are these software defined receivers (SDR) these days for
general
sw listening in the price range of, say, up to $ 1,500 ? The kind that work
with one's PC.

Haven't thought about them in quite a while.

Is WinRadio still the standard for these kind of things, or are there now
others also offering them, that are comparable, or better ?

Still, there's something really nice about twisting knobs, I guess, but this
old fashioned concept really dates me.

For a $ 1,500 budget what would you get ? Why ?

(for MIL and AM up to 30 MHz mainly; possibly some VHF/UHF if capable)

Thanks,
Bob
