REBEL RADIO GOES EASY LISTENING

Radio Rebelde was founded by Che Guevara in 1958. It has gone from
bastion of youthful revolution, and playing Guerilla Commander, to
playing classic American songs and Cuban pop hits. If you listened to
this morning's broadcast, instead of first-hand reports on the battles
against the Batista Army, you would have heard back to back songs by
Nat King Cole ("That's All" and "Mona Lisa") and the Lloyd Price tune
"Personality." The latter was in Spanish. Like a 45 record spinning on
a turntable, Che Guevara must be spinning in his grave. Guevara died
in October of 1967, thus missing Woodstock by two years.

TURKEY & THE HUNGRY HAM

Turkey & The Hungry Ham

I love SWL during the weekend for the variety of programs available,
many of them music related. Particularly enjoyable listening comes
from the Voice of Turkey. Their broadcasts are a pleasant blend of
news, special features, and exotic Turkish music.

And the "hungry ham?" Well that comes from my side trip to SSB and
amateur radio operators. The call sign of one of the hams (who hails
from Colorado) just happened to be W0EAT.

OTHER MUSIC PROGRAMS I ENJOYED

Radio Bulgaria serves up a tasty mix of music in their "Folk Studio"
show which includes some selections in English. Radio Exterior de
Espana was more in the "musica mundo" mode. And CBC Radio One and
Radio2 has a winner in their "Tonic" program (airing Saturday &
Sunday) hosted by Tim Tamashiro. Listen to Diana Krall pealing you a
grape, contemporary vocal artists Michael Buble and Norah Jones, and
the classic Canadian born pianist Oscar Peterson. Bon appetit.
