Also a raised seal of the state, over the signature of the official who issued it ... an MD-MPH in CA's case. In a very safe place, I keep a certified copy of my birth certificate, an SSA-issued SSN card, and every passport (including a current one) ever issued to me. While it has only recently become necessary to carry a passport for travel to neighboring countries, I found out the hard way that it was a good idea even decades ago to have the passport along when crossing borders. Returning from a diving trip to Cabo some years back, I carried nothing with me other a simple photocopy of my birth certificate. I was assured that was all I needed (and in times past didn't even need that for automobile border crossings) for the air trip to Baja. Upon return, I was stopped by immigration at the airport of entry back into the US. I was told that the photocopy wasn't certified (and hence worthless). They didn't even want to see my CDL. The most silly round of questioning I have ever experienced ensued. "Who is favored to go to the 'series'?" How the hell should I know? I'm not a sports fan. There were all manner of "pop culture" questions. Who cares? I endured this nonsense for over two hours. Finally, they abruptly said, "You can go now." In recent years, I have thought about the possibility that I was being f*cked with royally. They could have brought up a copy of my passport at any time with the information I gave them. The picture was unmistakably me. My spoken English is unaccented and exhibits a good grasp of the language. I was with a group containing many members who did have passports. Someone was having a good time at everyone's expense. As a result, I have zero respect for our immigration authorities. So even before the regulations demanded it, I made it a practice to go nowhere near the border of the US without my current passport in hand. I never wanted to endure that nonsense ever again. -- John Higdon +1 408 ANdrews 6-4400 AT&T-Free At Last |

How do they file returns without SSNs? This sounds bogus. They make one up. The SSA matches SSNs with names at the end of the year to determine if the money is flagged for the legitimate SSN holder or goes into their general fund. Hmm...the same thing could be said about Global Warming (tm). All we do is talk about both issues and do absolutely nothing that has any glimmer of effectiveness. Actually, the initiatives taken to increase the ozone layer have had a marked effect on increasing the ozone layer. Remember, the first such activity was begun in the 1970s when NASA had accumulated a history of photo documentation from space. That first initiative was banning Freon and other fluorocarbons. I suspect that the various incremental shifts in regard to global warming will probably have a similar effect, but we may not see it for a number of years. But you can't win for losing (or however the phrase goes). Those payments will not go to the person illegally using that SSN, but to the person who actually owns the SSN. If nobody owns the SSN, then the payments just go into the general fund to be distributed later. The benefits go into a suspense account where the money is immediately used up anyway. So, a real or a faked SSN/TIN doesn't matter as the receipts will be spent on those who have a valid number and who file for benefits. I am reminded that when I applied for early SS, do to a marked decline in my investment portfolio income, I was supposedly required to supply an official copy of my Certificate of Live Birth. I actually DID obtain such a certificate from the State of Ohio, but when I called the local SS office to for instructions, the official said my COLB was NOT required as they had already verified it from other sources. Perhaps from my U.S. Passport data? It is rather difficult to "make up" and SSN. Like credit card numbers, they have checksums. A bogus SSN will drop a flag the moment it enters an SSN-savy computer. It's not a checksum at all, but just a series of rules which are available to anyone who knows anybody who has done it. Even Wikipedia has posted the rules for the SSN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Security_number |

Anybody who knows anybody shady (or geeky) knows how to do it, no checksums involved, just a few simple rules. In fact, Wikipedia has an entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Security_number But back before all this hoo-hah, people made up fake SSNs by simply rearranging the last 4 numbers of a legit SSN. |

I'm reminded of when the witch doctors "caused" solar eclipses and then were worship when they made them go away. At least they put on quite a show. Now, we're told that there's too little ozone or too much carbon dioxide (things we cannot even detect or observe on our own as ordinary schlubbs) and then after we empty our pockets, we are told that all is right once again. Some things never change, but I think the witch doctors put on a better show.
