-imho- The Japanese made the right choice.

NOTE - For the Japanese both Military and Civilian
to Die Fighting to Defend their Home Islands
would have been "an Honorable {Heroic} Death".

Had nothing to do with the Japanese. We were showing Stalin we could
match his ruthlessness by attacking 2 civilian targets and incinerating
a quarter million people for no reason. The only way a nuclear
deterrent works is if others think you are insane enough to use it.
