The cossacks are not an ethnic group or tribe. However, they had to
adapt themself to the general lawlessness and conditions of the wild
steppes. Tzar Nicolas II was the last monarch in Russia whose personal
security was entrusted to them. They were the most loyal guard of
HIM . But again,the cossacks spoke many different languages and some
of them were Moslems !
