From being exposed to them . That's the purpose of it .

The old yellow Civil Defense units have a small radioactive sample (beta
emitter?) on the side of the case to use as a reality check; i.e., to

Huh? Their -purpose- of a G-M counter is to MEASURE particles, not EMIT
them. Please 'splain yourself.
