I've currently got, and use a Lowe HF-150. And it's a fine radio.
Quiet. Good audio. Very nice performance with a decent antenna,
although, with the preamp switched in, sensitivity on a whip is nothing
to sneeze at.

What you'll like about the HF-225 is the low noise floor, the very
good selectivity, the small desk footprint, and the reasonably simple
operation.

Cosmetically, it's kind of plain. But this is more than made up for
by it's performance.

The Europa model has higher spsc filters, and a factory installed FM
and Sync. These were optional extras on the base model 225, and not
easily found, if at all.

If you can find an HF-225, take it. You'll never regret it.
Superceded in the line by HF-250 which is a little more visually
compelling, with moderate improvements in performance over HF-225.

You'll pay about $500, more or less for either of them. Buy
carefully, and get a hands-on evaluation before you drop your cash.

For about the same money, you can find an Drake R8, or R8A. Or one of
my favorites: Ten-Tex RX-350/D. But you'll not regret the Lowe.

Besides, everyone should have at least one John Thorpe radio.
