Here's an excerpt: It may be KJES, a station on which I have no information (and would appreciate some). Appears to be in the Southwest USA. Gray Glenn Hauser has mentioned KJES in a few DX Listening Digests: http://www.dxing.com/dxr/dxld2140.htm "* U S A. "Vado, New Mexico (Medien Aktuell) -- At the end of 1989 and beginning of 1990, North American shortwave fans notice the first test transmissions of station KJES Missionary Radio Evangelism originating from a ranch operated by a Catholic priest for rehabilitating youth. In an interview he spoke of having two 50,000-watt shortwave transmitters, but that did not happen. On the contrary, the transmissions from the used transmitters were sporadic and did not happen regularly until 1992. The programs are essentially prayers, hymns, and readings." "KJES maintains an unvarying programming and frequency schedule, summer season and winter season, year after year. All times are UT, world time, same as London, which is six hours ahead of New York time (five in summer daylight saving time). Why be so specific when, e.g., Florida, Cuba and D.R. are in the same direxion? (gh, DXLD)" About 10 years ago, Glenn Hauser said he was in the Vado area and decided to make an unannounced visit to the KJES transmitter site. It was deserted at the time. I suppose it's a real shoestring operation. Frank Dresser This is interesting. Having been raised catholic, and catching the KJES broadcasts frequently over the last 3 years, I would not have guessed these guys are Catholics. For one thing, I never catch them mentioning the Pope, Mary, or the Catholic church and its rules/doctrines. Those are usually the clear giveaways. In my experience, a religious broadcaster who can go 20 minutes without mentioning any of those *was* invariably a Protestant. But who knows? This outfit may be one of the dissidents that have arisen from time to time after Vatican 2. Or maybe these guys were against diddling little boys... -- Col. I.P.
