I hear the ships come on sometimes, seems that the "main station" is the strongest, I think the weaker stations are the ships. Don't forget to try 2370 KHz USB as well as they've been on there too. Why are these using HF anyway? Don't they use sats most of the time? Or maybe being that this is an excercise they decide to just put it out in the clear. The military, US Coast Guard, and even Civil Air traffic (on flights over the ocean) make extensive use of HF. And as a side note BPL is going to put more peoples lives at risk than many people realize. But back on topic. No, they don't use SATs most of the time, HF (or if in range UHF) is much easier to establish comms than on the SATs. Also if you have commandos on the ground spotting or lazing targets to be taken out by F/A-18 Hornets its much easier to use a UHF radio than to aim an antenna at a Sat while your hiding in the forest. Even HF would be eaiser in most cases. During the last few weeks its been very exciting listing to this type of comms on UHF, for those not lucky enough to be close enough you can go he http://www.milaircomms.com/audio_library.html as I have actual audio recordings of this type of comms. I have one scanner that does nothing but scan all the downlink freqs of the milsats. Its connected to a 5 element yagi and preamp aimed at one of the UFO Mil Birds. Yes you'll hear some digitial and encrypted comms and once in a great while something in the clear. But in reality UHF (and HF) is used moreoften than the Sats... George http://www.MilAirComms.com |
