To be fair, it must be remembered that much of what you call the 'sand state stuff' is intentionally deafened on MW or below. I have several boatanchors as well and I love 'em, but above 2 MHz my solid state stuff pretty much leaves them in the dust, especially for selectivity. The shape factor of those old xtal filters was not very impressive.
