My brother has one of them. I think that he somehow disconnected the
transistor that enables the MW attenuator.

necessary to clip diode D23. I did this but instead of enabling the
pre-amp for MW, it seemed to disconnect the S-meter.

Anyone else had this problem? Once I resoldered the diode ends
together, the S-meter worked as normal. Was the board layout changed
for different versions? I don't know when my R71E was manufactured,
but it has the old Icom logo and the PBT control.
