I leave in Seattle area I did notice a lot hum/buzz on 6 and 9 MHZ before
Christmas
is improving now. I can receive Australia,New Zealand,BBC,Denmark,Bulgaria,
Taiwan,Radio China regularly after Christmas.

I will admit I use a 40' dipole antenna and a Welbrook Loop antenna.
I you are using only a portable with wip antenna you probably
be disappointed with reception. Most International transmissions
are directed to 'eastern' North America.

In article ,
says...

Just spent the week on the west coast of Vancouver Island DXing... well
trying to. Most nights it was wicked (that's a bad thing!) - way too
much hum and/or white noise as reported.

If anyone is aware of the Tofino/Ucluelet area you know that there's
absolutely nothing between it and Japan. Don't understand the problem.

Puzzling!

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? A shortwave
'dead zone' is not exactly an usual event...

Out of the blue one night I did get Radio Denmark clear as a bell, then
it drifted. Perhaps the ionosphere isn't dead - it's just taking a
break!

Maybe it's got holes in it...
